star this property answer text <p>Data pertaining to the Direct Entry Superintendent and Inspector schemes was provided by the College of Policing, which is the body responsible for administering those schemes.</p><p>The College of Policing works directly with police forces to assess the number of places required each year by forces. Applicants apply direct to participating forces and, if initial competency and eligibility checks are passed, are recommended for a national assessment centre run by the College. If successful, candidates are considered for appointment by their chosen force.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government wants to see police ranks opened up with flexible entry and exit paths, encourage diversity of experience and backgrounds amongst police leaders and develop a culture of challenge, particularly in the senior ranks.</p><p>National figures show that 88 Inspectors and Superintendents have joined police forces through the Direct Entry scheme since 2014. The number of recruits each year is as follows:</p><p>Direct Entry Inspector Scheme<br>• 17 people started the direct entry to inspector scheme in 2016. <br>• 21 people started the direct entry to inspector scheme in 2017. <br>• 17 people started the direct entry to inspector scheme in 2018.</p><p>Direct Entry Superintendent Scheme<br>• 9 people started the direct entry to superintendent scheme in 2014. <br>• 6 people started the direct entry to superintendent scheme in 2015 <br>• 8 people started the direct entry to superintendent scheme in 2016. <br>• 6 people started the direct entry to superintendent scheme in 2017. <br>• 4 people started the direct entry to superintendent scheme in 2018.</p><p><br>Information on which forces recruited Direct Entry Superintendents or Inspectors is not held centrally by the Home Office.</p>

star this property answer text <p>Direct entry offers the opportunity to widen the talent pool from where we attract our police officers and will bring in people from a diverse range of backgrounds.</p><p> </p><p>According to the College of Policing, which is responsible for delivery of the direct entry schemes, 29 direct entry superintendents have been appointed since the scheme began in 2014 (9 in 2014, 6 in 2015, 8 in 2016, 6 in 2017).</p><p> </p><p>The introduction of direct entry allowed professionals from other sectors to join policing at a senior rank for the first time, with recruits drawn from occupational backgrounds including: academia; banking; business; law; local and national government.</p><p> </p><p>To date, the Home Office has provided £12.2 million to enable the recruitment and training of direct entrants. This funding has covered the salary costs of superintendent recruits, as well as supported the recruitment and training of direct entrants at both superintendent and inspector level. Next year the College of Policing will be publishing an evaluation of the implementation of direct entry, which will include specific funding and delivery data.</p>
