The UK strongly condemned the 1 July attack on a group of Sikhs and Hindus in Jalalabad, responsiblity for which was claimed by Daesh. Afghanistan is a priority country for the FCO’s human rights work. The FCO has increased the British Council's overall grant over the current Spending Review period. Whilst specific grant funding for its work in the developed world has decreased, it has recently been agreed to provide some additional funding in this period to specifically support the British Council's work in Europe and in the developed world up to 2020. Decisions beyond this date will be taken in the next Spending Review.

The British Council's activity and presence in Europe is primarily a matter for its management team and its Trustees. The British Council would have to seek the agreement of the Foreign Secretary before any closures of offices. Before any decisions are made, the British Council would also undertake an extensive consultation process with partners, stakeholders and the Devolved Administrations.

more like this

star this property answer text
We will not be giving a running commentary on numbers. The refugees that we are bringing to the United Kingdom are very vulnerable people. Our prime concern is their safety and protection as they arrive in this country. We believe that one way to protect their privacy and ensure their recovery and integration is to limit the amount of information about them that we make publicly available. We want to ensure the understandable public interest in the scheme is not based on a running commentary on the numbers that have arrived.

Notwithstanding this, the Home Office is committed to publishing data in an orderly way as part of the regular quarterly Immigration Statistics, in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics. The next set of figures will be in the quarterly release on 26 November 2015 and will cover the period July-September 2015.

The programme is driven by need, and the number resettled in a particular period will depend on a range of factors. This includes the number of referrals we have received from UNHCR and the number of confirmed places we have received from local authorities that are suitable for the specific needs of those who have been accepted for resettlement. Rather than a monthly or yearly target we acknowledge that some months we will resettle more or less than others because it is based on the need in the region at that time and the progress of those people through the system. We cannot, therefore, state at this time how many confirmed places will be made available by the end of 2016.

star this property answer text
We make advice available to help young people and adults make informed decisions about their options including careers in the creative industries.

The National Careers Service provides professional careers advice to young people and adults via a dedicated helpline, website and in the local community. The website contains a number of job profiles. These includes information on roles, skills and entry requirements for occupations and careers in the creative industries. All National Careers Service provider advisers are qualified professionals, most of whom are qualified to level 6 in delivering careers advice and have access to continuous professional development.

Schools have a statutory duty to provide access to information on the full range of options to their pupils aged 12 -18 years. This must include information on the full range of education and training options, including apprenticeships in many industries. Through their links with the Careers and Enterprise Company and programmes such as “Inspiring the Future”, young people have access to employers from a variety of industries. This contact helps to broaden their horizons and consider different opportunities.

We want to go further to ensure that everyone can find a fulfilling education or training route that is right for them, whether this is an academic route, technical route or apprenticeship. The Secretary of State confirmed in a speech to the Sutton Trust on 12 July that we will publish a careers strategy in the Autumn. This will improve the extent and quality of support for people of all ages.

We are implementing apprenticeship reforms to continue to improve the quality of apprenticeships for all, providing the skills that employers need to reach our commitment of 3 million starts in England by 2020. We want better apprenticeships in more sectors, covering more roles, including in the creative industries.

star this property answer text
We know the SSI Redcar plant lost over £600 million in over three years. When the company went into liquidation, the Official Receiver bought supplies to keep certain operations, such as the coke ovens, going in the hope of finding a commercial buyer.

Unfortunately, no commercial buyer could be found to maintain operations at the plant. While this was deeply disappointing, with such large losses and debts, and the price of steel produced at SSI expected to stay depressed for some considerable time, it was perhaps not surprising.

It is too early to say what the costs of preparing the site for redevelopment will be. This will depend on the state the site is left in following liquidation, the future use of the site and any private sector interest in it, which could generate value to offset redevelopment costs.

The Government is providing the Official Receiver with the funds and support necessary to deliver a safe liquidation of SSI.
