This important pledge of international action reflects the success of the Illegal Wildlife Trade Conference in London in October, which was attended by more than 70 countries and more than 400 organisations. The conference focused the minds of international governments on the issue and energized global cooperation to fight the illegal wildlife trade. We continue to urge de-escalation.</p><p>We have consistently stated our support for the sovereign right of the Republic of Cyprus to exploit the oil and gas in its internationally agreed Exclusive Economic Zone. We also continue to attach the utmost importance to securing a long-term settlement to the division of Cyprus and believe the most enduring way of resolving difficult issues such as this is to achieve a Cyprus settlement. We encourage all parties to redouble their efforts in pursuit of this.</p><p>We believe it is critical for stability in the Mediterranean and for the integrity of the rules-based international system that disputes such as this are resolved, not through force, militarisation or coercion, but through dialogue and in accordance with international law. They discussed a wide range of bilateral and regional issues.</p><p>The UK shares the concerns of both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities over the missing persons following the events of 1974, which understandably remains a very sensitive issue. We commend the important work being undertaken by the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP), and the contribution it makes to bringing closure for the many families affected. We facilitate the CMP including by enabling it to work from a British-owned site in the Buffer Zone at minimal cost. In June 2019, the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus was granted access by Turkey to 30 additional military areas in the north of the island that could contain burial sites. We have been working hard with our international partners to establish a network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), and gain agreement for MPAs in East Antarctica, the Weddell Sea and around the Antarctic Peninsula. It is not in our gift to implement the MPA unilaterally. It is subject to an international treaty. At the recent CCAMLR annual meeting, which concluded on 2 November 2018, these proposals were rejected by Russia and China. As set out in the Political Declaration on the future relationship between the UK and EU, the Government has offered to cooperate closely on defence and security as part of an ambitious Security Partnership. This would be on a case-by-case basis, where of mutual benefit.</p><p>While our focus remains on securing agreement with the EU, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, like the rest of Government, is also preparing for &quot;No Deal&quot;. In a No Deal scenario, the UK would have to withdraw from Common Security and Defence Policy missions and operations - both military and civilian - and withdraw associated personnel seconded to the EU institutions.
