	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 10/05/2018 answer text <p>Evidence has shown links between certain increases in social media use and poorer mental health, however it is not clear whether increased use causes poorer mental health. For example, it is possible that poorer mental health drives an increase in use of social media.</p><p> </p><p>To better understand the relationship between social media and the mental health of children and young people up to 25 years old, the Chief Medical Officer is leading a systematic review to examine all relevant international research in the area. The review will inform a report from the Chief Medical Officer, expected for publication next year.</p><p> </p><p>The Department has also commissioned NHS Digital to undertake a Children and Young People’s Mental Health Survey to examine the prevalence of mental disorders. In the United Kingdom, infertility affects one in seven of all couples of child-bearing age. It can cause great psychological distress for those seeking to start a family, if not addressed. There are effective treatments and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Fertility Guidelines set out clearly how the treatment can be offered in the most clinically and cost-effective way. The Government recognises that there is variation in the commissioning of National Health Service fertility services across England. Patients with infertility have every right to expect NHS services based on clinical need.</p><p> </p><p>Clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) have a statutory responsibility to commission healthcare services that meet the needs of their whole population, including fertility services. The action plan will be divided into the themes of reproductive choice (choosing if when and how to become pregnant) and reproductive wellbeing. Menstrual issues, including stigma surrounding heavy menstrual bleeding will be a focus of the strategy, specifically with regards to effective information and communication and workforce training.</p><p> </p><p>PHE is aligning the work with the recently published Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) publications on guidance for menstrual wellbeing. Research has identified that younger donors offer the potential for better patient outcomes and a greater chance of survival. In 2017, 82% of people who were selected to donate their stem cells were male, and 58% were men aged 30 and under. In acknowledgement of this fact, the Department provides funding to Anthony Nolan and NHS Blood and Transplant to support recruitment of young male donors. In 2017 69% of new potential donors recruited to the United Kingdom registry were under the age of 30, and 40% of new potential donors were male.</p><p> </p><p>The Department also funds Anthony Nolan and NHS Blood and Transplant to improve equity of access to unrelated donor stem cell transplantation for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) patients through targeted recruitment to the Anthony Nolan and the NHS Stem Cell Registry.</p><p> </p><p>The Department has provided more than £26 million to NHS Blood and Transplant and Anthony Nolan for stem cell donation since 2011 and have set very specific targets about the proportion of donors that must be from BAME backgrounds; for example, in this financial year, Anthony Nolan will continue to target more than 35% of the umbilical cords stored in the UK Cord Blood Bank to be donated by mothers from BAME backgrounds.</p> answering member constituency Thurrock answering member printed Jackie Doyle-Price question first answered 26/10/2018 11:53:19 answering member 4065 label Biography information for Dame Jackie Doyle-Price
