star this property answer text
Higher education institutions (HEIs) are independent and have autonomy over which courses to deliver (such as Youth Work courses). It is the government’s role to help ensure that the higher education (HE) sector as a whole is responsive to, and able to, deliver demand for HE provision.

Whilst we do not hold accurate course figures, first degree entrants into Youth Work studies at UK HEIs have decreased by 26% between the period 2013 to 2014 and the period 2016 to 2017.

Through our regulatory reforms, we have established the Office for Students (OfS). This is a new regulator for the HE sector, and it has student choice at the heart of its agenda. OfS has introduced tools like the Teaching Excellence and Students Outcomes Framework and Longitudinal Education Outcomes data. These tools will put more information into the hands of prospective students. They will also allow students to better understand which course is right for them and the outcomes delivered by various courses at different institutions.

star this property answer text
The Government does not prescribe a curriculum for initial teacher training (ITT). Providers of ITT must ensure that their courses allow trainees to demonstrate the Teachers’ Standards in full; this includes ensuring that trainees are equipped to “adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils”. The standards require trainees to demonstrate that they “have a clear understanding of the needs of all pupils, including those with special educational needs”. It is for individual providers to decide how best to ensure that their programmes meet the requirements of the standards.

Following a review of ITT quality by Sir Andrew Carter, the Secretary of State appointed a leading head teacher, Stephen Munday CBE, to lead an independent expert group tasked with developing a framework of core initial teacher training content. This will provide further guidance for ITT providers and trainees on how the Teachers’ Standards should be applied to the initial training phase. We expect to receive the group’s report shortly and will consider their recommendations carefully and determine how they should be taken forward.

The Teachers’ Standards can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/283566/Teachers_standard_information.pdf

Whether or not a school closes or remains open in these circumstances is a decision for the head teacher.

Head teachers’ decisions about closure will depend upon whether arrangements can be made for voting to take place discretely within their school. It may be possible for a school to remain open if pupils and the voting public can be kept apart, with a separate entrance and exit with no compromise to the school's controlled access.
more like this

star this property answer text
The Government recognises the importance of improving political literacy and has ensured it is embedded within the National Curriculum as part of the citizenship programmes of study for Key Stages 3 and 4. One of the aims of citizenship education is to enable all pupils to develop a sound knowledge and understanding of how the United Kingdom is governed, its political system, and how citizens participate in its democratic systems of Government. We trust schools to use teaching materials that suit their pupils’ needs.

For 16 to 19 year olds who remain in education, they are offered study programmes which bring together qualifications with other activities to prepare them for adult life. Post-16 providers have the flexibility to tailor the content of study programmes to meet the needs of the student.

Where teachers bring political views to the attention of pupils, they are legally required to do so in an impartial manner, and offer a balanced presentation of opposing views. At the same time, we expect that the teaching of any issue in schools should be consistent with the principles of balance and objectivity.
