We have issued guidance in the form of Medicine Supply Notifications and, on 18 July, issued a National Patient Safety Alert which made it clear that Ozempic, which is solely licensed to treat Type 2 diabetes, should only be used for that purpose, and should not be routinely prescribed for weight loss.</p><p>We have engaged with relevant regulators, and the General Pharmaceutical Council, General Medical Council, Health and Care Professions Council, Nursing and Midwifery Council and Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland have issued a joint statement stressing the importance of health and care professionals meeting regulatory standards.</p><p>We have also added Ozempic and other glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists to the list of medicines that cannot be exported from, or hoarded in, the United Kingdom.</p><p>We are continuing to work closely with manufacturers and others working in the supply chain to help ensure the continued supply of these medicines for UK patients, for example by asking suppliers to expedite deliveries. We have provided advice for healthcare professionals on how to manage patients requiring this medicine whilst there are shortages and are keeping this under review as the situation evolves. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 23/10/2023 answer text <p>Increasing the diagnosis rates of cancers, including leukaemia, in young people is a priority for the Government. Several organisations, including the Department, are taking steps across England to increase diagnosis rates, including setting stretching ambitions, supporting general practitioners (GPs) in referring patients, expanding diagnostic capacity and enabling more precise diagnosis through technology.</p><p>NHS England is working to deliver the ambition it set in its Long Term Plan to diagnose 75% of cancers at stages one and two by 2028.</p><p>The Department is working to support GPs in improving referrals for suspected cancer. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance underpinning cancer referrals sets out detailed guidance for GPs on the symptoms of cancer in children and young people, recommending very urgent referral, namely an appointment within 48 hours, for those presenting with a range of potential cancer symptoms, including any unexplained lump, bruising or bleeding, neurological symptoms or bone pain. For many of these symptoms, GPs now have direct access to request diagnostic tests including X-ray and ultrasound.</p><p>Backed by £2.3 billion of capital funding, the Department is expanding diagnostic capacity across the National Health Service by rolling out more Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs), delivering vital tests, scans and checks. With 123 CDCs open already and up to 160 set to open by March 2025, these offer millions of patients the chance to access quicker, more convenient checks outside of hospitals, with capacity prioritised for cancer. This is contributing to the elective recovery delivery plan ambition for 75% of patients urgently referred by their GP for suspected cancer to receive a diagnosis or have cancer ruled out within 28 days.</p><p>Additionally, the NHS now offers all children and young people with cancer whole genome sequencing to enable more comprehensive and precise diagnosis, and access to more personalised treatments.</p><p>These steps being taken across England, including in Romford, are improving early diagnosis and giving more children and young people the best chance of beating cancer.</p> answering member constituency Colchester answering member printed Will Quince question first answered 23/10/2023 14:19:43 answering member 4423 label Biography information for Will Quince

This expansion was completed in September 2020 and has delivered five new medical schools in England.</p><p>In addition, the Government temporarily lifted the cap on medical school places for students who completed A-Levels in 2020 and in 2021 and who had an offer from a university in England to study medicine, subject to their grades. As a result of this temporary change, the intakes for 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 were 8,405 and 8,460 respectively, significantly above the planned expansion cap of 7,500.</p><p>NHS England has been commissioned to produce a long-term workforce plan. The Government has committed to publishing the plan shortly which will include independently verified forecasts for the number of healthcare professionals required in future years, taking account of improvements in retention and productivity. Additionally, there are over 5,300 more doctors and over 12,300 more nurses working across the NHS compared to a year ago.</p><p> </p><p>All eligible nursing degree students receive a non-repayable training grant of a minimum of £5,000 per academic year, with additional funding for studying certain courses such as Mental Health Nursing or Learning Disabilities Nursing, and financial support for childcare, dual accommodation costs and travel. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 12/09/2023 answer text <p>Progress continues to be made for patients with type 1 diabetes, with over 65% of people currently using flash glucose monitoring to help manage their condition. 97% of pregnant women are being offered flash glucose monitoring and 78% accept the offer.</p><p>The NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme supports those identified at high risk of type 2 diabetes to reduce their risk. Data as of February 2023 shows a 20% reduction in risk for those who are referred to the programme compared to those who are not.</p><p>The local National Health Service in Romford, Havering and the neighbouring boroughs of Barking and Dagenham and Redbridge has set out a series of improvements to care for patients with diabetes. Advances are paid back over a maximum of 12 months and in the Autumn Budget 2018, we announced that from October 2021, the payback period for these advances will be extended further, allowing claimants up to 16 months.</p><p> </p><p>This is just one of a number of measures the Department has put in place to support claimants such as paying those claimants moving from Housing Benefit onto UC a two week ‘transitional housing payment’. AFCs ensure Work Coaches and other DWP staff can effectively support serving personnel, service leavers, veterans and their families.</p><p> </p><p>In addition to the local activity in Jobcentres to support veterans our National Employer and Partnership Team (NEPT) also work closely with the Ministry of Defence to align engagement activity in support of the veteran’s strategy. Of this, Havering London Borough Council will receive £37 million, an increase of 13.6% per head of their population aged 2 to 18 years old. This increase, of 13% nationally, comes on top of the £1.5 billion increase over the last two years and will continue to support the local authorities and schools with the increasing costs they are facing.</p><p>The department is also investing £2.6 billion between 2022 and 2025 to deliver new places and improve existing provision for pupils with SEND or who require alternative provision. The National Centre’s role will be fundamental in ensuring local authorities have the right guidance and resources they need to develop their family hubs.</p><p>The &quot;Family Hub Implementation Toolkit&quot; published by the National Centre is clear that through family hubs, statutory services and voluntary and community sector (VCS) partners work together to get families the help they need. The toolkit sets out that representatives from the VCS should be involved in the process of developing the local hub model, and highlights the role that the VCS can play in meeting the needs of the local community. The UK has consistently stated our support for the sovereign right of the Republic of Cyprus to exploit the oil and gas in its internationally agreed Exclusive Economic Zone. We continue to believe that any development of Cyprus' oil and gas should be for the benefit of all Cypriots. We believe the most enduring way of resolving difficult issues such as this is to achieve a Cyprus settlement. We encourage all parties to redouble their efforts in pursuit of this. We welcome Turkey's withdrawal of survey vessels from waters around Cyprus and the Aegean in recent months as a significant contribution towards de-escalation of tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean. We urge all parties to support measures aimed at de-escalation and reducing tensions; and to resolve issues through dialogue. Any EU listings decisions are a matter for EU member states. The UK will pursue an independent sanctions policy at the end of the Transition Period. We will look to carry over existing EU sanctions into domestic law wherever it helps to further the UK's foreign policy objectives. The transfer of each EU sanctions regime into UK law will be considered on a case by case basis, and designations transferred into UK autonomous sanctions regimes at the end of the Transition Period will be subject to a final ministerial decision-making process.</p><p>We believe it is critical for stability in the Mediterranean and for the integrity of the rules-based international system that disputes such as this are resolved, not through force, militarisation or coercion, but through dialogue and in accordance with international law.
