star this property answer text
The UK has long standing ties with the Commonwealth through our shared history, language, values and legal system. As current Chair-in-Office we continue to work with the Commonwealth Secretariat, member states and the Commonwealth organisations and networks to ensure that the Commonwealth realises its full potential, by promoting democratic values and development, increasing trade, helping tackle global challenges such as extremism and climate change, and standing up for small states. As my Rt Hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary set out in his Written Ministerial Statement on 14 January, we are making concrete progress in delivering on commitments made at last year's Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting to enhance security, prosperity, fairness and sustainability.

As part of our commitment to the Commonwealth, the former Foreign Secretary announced last year our intention to open 9 new missions in Commonwealth countries (Lesotho, Eswatini, The Bahamas, Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu). We expect these missions to open this year. Opening missions in these countries will expand the UK's diplomatic network from 38 to 47 Commonwealth members – a practical demonstration of our ambition and intent to increase the resources which the Government is devoting to Commonwealth member states.

star this property answer text
Intolerance and bullying has no place in our society and no one should live in fear of bullying on the basis of their sexuality.

As part of our commitments in the government’s Hate Crime Action Plan and Integrated Communities Action Plan, the department is taking forward a number of measures to help the sector prevent and tackle prejudice and bullying, and promote tolerance. This includes continuing to support schools in their requirement to promote our shared values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law and mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs.

All schools must have a behaviour policy that includes measures to prevent bullying, and all schools must comply with the requirements of the Equality Act. The department recently published the Respectful Schools Communities toolkit; a self-review and signposting tool to support schools to develop a whole-school approach which promotes respect and discipline. In addition to this, the department is providing over £2.8 million of funding, between September 2016 and March 2020, to 4 anti-bullying organisations to support schools to tackle bullying. This includes projects targeting bullying of particular groups, such as those who are victims of hate related bullying, along with a project to report bullying online.

star this property answer text
Free speech plays a vital and important role in our society, and universities should be places where students are exposed to a range of issues, however controversial, and are encouraged to debate and challenge them.

The government, with the support of key stakeholders in the higher education sector, has worked alongside the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to produce the recently published Freedom of Expression guidance. This guidance can be found at: https://www.equalityhumanrights.com/sites/default/files/20150318_foe_legal_framework_guidance_revised_final.pdf. The guidance will enable universities and student unions to understand their obligations for protecting and supporting free speech. The EHRC will continue to maintain this guidance to ensure it remains relevant and accessible to the whole sector.

The Office for Students (OfS) will also have an important role to play in championing free speech and promoting good practice. A new public interest principle relating to free speech has been built into the OfS regulatory framework.

A range of Whitehall Departments, including Department for International Development (DFID) are represented in our High Commission in Dar es Salaam covering the broad range of interests we share with the Government of Tanzania. Tanzania is one of the largest recipients of British Overseas Development Aid (around £150m per annum).

In a sign of our deep and long-term relationship with Africa, we are increasing the British diplomatic presence in sub-Saharan Africa, including Tanzania, so we can develop more effective partnerships and achieve our mutual goals. And finally the appointment of the Hon Member for Romford as the Prime Minister's Trade Envoy to Tanzania will only serve to cement further our bilateral relationship.
more like this
