star this property answer text
The work of healthcare workers across the globe is vital and they must be protected when carrying out their critical work. We recognise that under international humanitarian law, Israel, as the occupying power, has a duty of ensuring and maintaining public health to the fullest extent possible. The wounded and critically ill in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories should be able to access the urgent medical care they need. The British Embassy in Tel Aviv regularly raises the importance of regularised access to healthcare with the Israeli authorities. During his call on 4 July with the Israeli chargé d'affaires in London, the Minister of State for the Middle East, Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, urged Israel to safeguard access to healthcare and take proactive steps to guarantee the safety of civilians during Israeli operations in the West Bank. The Foreign Secretary also emphasised the importance of the proactive protection of civilians during his call with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen on 5 July.

The British Embassy in Tel Aviv regularly raises the importance of this issue with the Israeli authorities. We strongly condemn all forms of violence and incitement to violence directed towards healthcare workers. The wounded and critically ill in Gaza and the West Bank should be able to access the urgent medical care they need. The UK Government welcomes any effort to cooperate between the Israeli and Palestinian peoples, including in the healthcare sector. star this property answer text
The UK is a global leader in research on tackling malaria and other global diseases, with wide-ranging expertise across the UK academic, public and private sectors. For example, the world's first World Health Organisation approved malaria vaccine was developed by a British company, GlaxoSmithKline, and the new R21 malaria vaccine has been developed by Oxford University's Jenner Institute.

The Government continues to support the deployment of UK expertise though further investments in research and development. This includes the University of Oxford and the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit's trial on a new combination therapy for drug-resistant malaria, and the Innovative Vector Control Consortium, established by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, including their novel class of bed-nets which kill mosquitoes resistant to traditional insecticides.

The UK also provides support to multilateral institutions such as GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria to deliver life-saving interventions to disease-endemic countries.

All countries, including Israel, have a legitimate right to self-defence. The reports of civilian Palestinian casualties, including women and children, are alarming. The majority of our malaria investments are through the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The UK continues to be a strong supporter of the Global Fund, having donated over £4.4 billion to date, and we will be announcing our support to the seventh replenishment in the coming weeks. In addition to this we will continue to invest in research to develop new tools to prevent, diagnose and treat malaria and in bilateral programmes to support malaria endemic countries to strengthen their health systems.
more like this
