	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 16/03/2015 answer text <p>The Department offers Service personnel the opportunity to study for International (General Certificate of Secondary Education) (IGCSE) examinations as opposed to GCSE examinations, since these are better suited to the work and life of Service personnel. The IGCSE does not involve coursework, instead candidates sit an extra paper. The IGCSE qualification is recognised world-wide.</p><p> </p><p>In 2014, there were 1,763 applications from Armed Forces personnel for the IGCSE examinations. The figures group Scotland and Northern Ireland together and then England and Wales together.</p><p> </p><p>These visits can comprise presentations, citizenship talks, meetings with staff, participation in career events, practice interviews and activities with the students, such as science and maths challenges, and other indoor or outdoor exercises.</p><p> </p><p>The Armed Forces never visit schools for recruitment purposes and would only ever visit a school after being invited by a teacher to support school activities. Similar contributions to schools are made by the Police, Fire, Ambulance and other emergency services. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 24/03/2015 answer text <p>As stated in question 223160, it is Ministry of Defence policy that all three Services must obtain the written consent of a parent or guardian for candidates under the age of 18 before an application to join the Armed Forces can be processed.</p><p>Each of the single Services has their own recruitment and selection policy document which sets out the responsibility of the recruiters, including the specific duty of care which should be provided to candidates who are under 18 years of age.</p><p>In respect of the Royal Navy, this document is the BR3 (part 4 - Recruiting), for the Army it is the Recruiting Orders Group Instructions and for the RAF it is Air Publication 3391 - The Royal Air Force Manual of Recruiting and Selection. Each of these documents is available to recruiting personnel on the Ministry of Defence Intranet or their specific training sites.</p><p>In addition to these recruitment policy documents, training for recruiters is undertaken by the respective Service training staff; this also provides specific guidance on the recruitment of candidates under the age of 18.</p><p>Through the recruiting and training pipelines, regulations and safeguards are in place to protect candidates under age 18.</p><p>In the Army, significant effort is made to ensure that all candidates (pre-enlistment), recruits (post-enlistment) and parents/guardians understand them. A wide range of courses are available to all Serving personnel at different levels, from basic computer skills to distance-learning degrees.</p><p>The Armed Forces Learning Credits Scheme helps support development for Service personnel. Standard Learning Credits fund small-scale learning whilst Enhanced Learning Credits are designed to provide help towards the cost of gaining further or higher education qualifications. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 16/03/2015 answer text <p>Throughout the Armed Forces’ history, personnel have not been permitted to participate in industrial action or in any form of political activity.</p><p> </p><p>Armed Forces personnel are free to join trade and professional associations. They may also join other organisations representing their interests such as the Forces Pension Society, the British Armed Forces Federation, the single Service Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender fora, and the Armed Forces Muslim Association.</p><p> </p><p>The chain of command is responsible for representing the interests of those under command, and all Service personnel have a statutory right to complain on any matter relating to their service.
