The British Government is deeply concerned about the sentencing to death of 683
people by a court in Minya on 28 April. I made a statement on 28 April expressing
my concern over the sentences and reports that some of the defendants may not have
had adequate legal representation. On 2 April, during my last meeting with Egyptian
Foreign Minister Fahmy, I raised the death sentences imposed on 529 people by the
same court on 24 March, and asked the Egyptian government to ensure that the defendants'
human and legal rights are properly upheld. The Government will continue to raise
these concerns with the Egyptian government.
