star this property answer text <p>The VAT reduced rate for domestic fuel and power is aimed at reducing costs on household purchases of several supplies of energy, including electricity which is generated from renewable sources. This measure helps lower the cost of household bills for families.</p><p> </p><p>The UK Government also places additional taxes on the extraction of oil and gas, with companies engaged in the production of oil and gas on the UK Continental Shelf subject to headline tax rates on their profits that are more than double those paid by other businesses. To date, the sector has paid over £330 billion in production taxes.</p><p> </p><p>The UK is currently a net importer of both oil and gas and even under the most rapid energy transition scenarios, the UK is expected to remain a net importer for the foreseeable future. Managing the declining production from our relatively small domestic basin, while reducing our overall usage of fossil fuels, is therefore compatible with our climate change commitments.</p><p> </p><p>Overall, the UK is fourth on the ODI’s 2018 G7 Fossil Fuel Subsidy Scorecard and is ranked first among G7 nations for pledges and commitments. Since the ODI published their report, the Government has signed a target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 in law, becoming the first G7 country to set such a goal. Among a range of other actions, we have also launched a comprehensive global review of the link between biodiversity and economic growth to be led by Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The most common measure of inequality is income, and there are a number of countries in Europe that had a higher level of income inequality than the UK in 2017, including Spain, Portugal and Greece. Income inequality by this metric is lower today than it was in 2010.</p><p> </p><p>Such measures of inequality do not capture the benefit households receive from the Government’s significant and progressive spending on public services. In 2019/20, the lowest income households will receive over £4 in public spending for every £1 they pay in tax on average. While the highest income households will contribute over £5 in tax for every £1 they receive in public spending on average.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>At Budget 2018, the Chancellor announced his intention to tackle the scourge of single-use plastic waste through the introduction of a new tax on plastic packaging which does not contain a sufficient amount of recycled content. Earlier this year, the government launched a consultation seeking views on the initial proposed design for the tax. This closed in May and the government intends to publish a summary of responses in due course.</p><p> </p><p>As with any new tax, extensive work must be carried out before implementation, to ensure the tax operates effectively. The new tax will be introduced in April 2022.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government engages in a range of activities designed to facilitate lower global greenhouse gas emissions, including through international diplomacy, and the provision of Official Development Assistance.</p><p> </p><p>As set out in the Green Finance Strategy, the Government will align the UK’s Official Development Assistance spending with the Paris Agreement. In practical terms, this will include ensuring any investment support for fossil fuels affecting emissions is in line with the Paris Agreement temperature goals and transition plans.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>A number of respondents to last year’s call for evidence on single use plastic waste suggested that an incineration tax could discourage incineration and promote other forms of waste management such as recycling.</p><p>At Budget 2018, the Chancellor announced that he would not at this point be taking forward a tax on the incineration of waste. However, should wider policies not deliver the government’s waste ambitions, government will consider the introduction of such a tax, in conjunction with landfill tax, taking account of the possible impacts on local authorities.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Tobacco Products (Traceability and Security Features) Regulations 2019 require the movement of tobacco products to be recorded by economic operators through the supply chain.</p><p>Tobacco manufacturers are required to provide economic operators with the software necessary to record movements.</p><p> </p><p>If an economic operator is unable to comply with the Regulations due to software issues, HM Revenue &amp; Customs will consider what action to take on a case-by-case basis according to the facts of the particular case.</p> more like this
