star this property answer text
Last week, the National Lottery Heritage Fund announced that Old College, Aberystwyth has been awarded almost £10 million of National Lottery money. The National Lottery Heritage Memorial Fund, which allocates Lottery funds to heritage, is a non-departmental public body accountable to parliament through the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The mechanism in which funding decisions are made on individual applications and policies are independent of the Government. The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the distributor. This funding commitment builds on the investment of over £400million of National Lottery funding into more than 2,600 heritage projects in Wales.

The investment in Old College will generate around 50 new jobs and encourage graduates to stay in Aberystwyth to establish new businesses, boosting the local economy. The renovation will create gallery spaces, a centre for entrepreneurs and new businesses, artist studios, community rooms and facilities for major events and festivals. This investment will give the building a new lease of life, securing a sustainable future for generations to come. This funding will also be supported by £3 million investment by Welsh Government and £3 million from the European Regional Development Fund through the Tourism Attractor Destination programme.

Flood response in Wales is a devolved matter. It was announced in March Budget that the UK Government will fund assistance for flood relief. For 2020-21, the Welsh Government will receive an additional £17m in Barnett consequentials from additional spending on flood prevention in England. If the Welsh Government matches our spending per head on flood prevention then this would see over £300m spent in Wales by 2026-27.
more like this

The UK Government recognises the vital role that European structural funds have played in Wales over the past two decades, and has committed, at a minimum, to matching current levels of funding for each nation. We are determined that Wales will not be out of pocket now that we have left the EU, and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund will be instrumental in making good on this.

In terms of the powers that the Welsh Government will have over these funds, the UK Government is fully committed to respecting devolution and the devolved institutions. We want to ensure that the UK Shared Prosperity Fund can deliver for the people of Wales, and the Secretary of State for Wales has had positive discussions with colleagues in the Welsh Government on how our two Governments can work together to make a success of the Fund.
more like this

Welsh ports will benefit from leaving the transition period as it ensures that we take back control of our laws, trade, borders and money on the basis of the agreement we reached in October and which enabled us to leave the EU on 31 January.

Furthermore, on 12 June, the Government committed to building new border facilities in Great Britain for carrying out required checks, such as customs compliance, transit, and Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) checks, as well as providing targeted support to ports to build new infrastructure. Where there is no space at ports for new infrastructure, the Government will build new inland sites where these checks and other activities will take place. The Government is consulting with ports across the UK including Holyhead and Fishguard to agree what infrastructure is required. This includes working with the Welsh Government recognising their devolved responsibilities in regards to ports.

It is the UK’s second busiest ‘Roll on-Roll off’ port and its commercial freight tonnage is increasing year on year. It is vital to the UK economy and specifically to North Wales, the North of England and the Midlands.

It is therefore positive that the North Wales Growth Deal, which is jointly funded by the UK and Welsh Governments, is currently expected to invest significantly into developing the port’s infrastructure. This includes renovation works to the harbour breakwater, connectivity improvements from the railway station to the ferry terminal, additional hardstanding, as well as additional capacity for large freight and cruise ships to berth in the harbour.
more like this
