We do so bilaterally and with international partners, including the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan and the EU. At the Universal Periodic Review of Afghanistan at the UN Human Rights Council in January 2019, we recommended that the Government of Afghanistan establish an independent mechanism to assess how religious and ethnic minorities can be better protected.

Following attacks last year affecting the Hazara community in Afghanistan, Embassy officials met with Hazara Members of Parliament for Ghazni to understand their concerns. The UK provides a range of support which aims to enhance the Afghan Government's ability to protect all Afghan citizens, including minority ethnic and religious groups such as the Hazaras.
more like this

This in turn facilitates the increase of trade, providing benefits for governments, consumers and producers in these Commonwealth countries. For example:

In Eswatini, the programme has conducted a post-clearance audit and delivered workshops aimed at creating more efficient and cost effective customs clearance systems at the border;

In Tonga and Zambia, Time Release Studies (TRS) of customs clearance processes have identified possible areas for systematic efficiencies;

In Sierra Leone, advanced training has enabled customs officials to more accurately identify the customs value and corresponding rate of duty to be paid on imported goods; and

In Malawi, workshops have helped improve the recording of information related to different categories of goods to enable the correct collection of customs duties.

The centres are the responsibility of the Libyan authorities. No UK funding or European Union Emergency Trust Fund (EUTF) funding is allocated to the Libyan Department for Combatting Illegal Migration (DCIM), nor detention centres in Libya. The EUTF is working to improve conditions for migrants in DCIM-run centres on a humanitarian basis. Initiatives include providing safe spaces for the most vulnerable, installing air ventilation, water, sanitation and hygiene items, toilet facilities, and providing mobile medical assistance. In parallel, the EU is seeking sustainable and humane alternatives for those in these centres, including by supporting voluntary returns or resettlement in safe third countries.
more like this

It will take place along-side the first Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the AU and the African Regional Economic Communities on 7-8 July. Attendance at such events by partners like the United Kingdom is by invitation. The Government's priorities for the AU are reflected in the strategic partnership agreement between the AU and the United Kingdom signed in Addis Ababa on 21 February 2019. Through this partnership we will work together to support a shared vision for a prosperous, secure and innovative Africa, building on growing economic ties to forge new opportunities for young people and reinforce our close bonds.
