unstar this property answer text <p>The Minister for Africa, Minister Baldwin, spoke to Zimbabwe's Foreign Minister on 29 January. The Minister also summoned the Zimbabwean Ambassador on 17 January to express our concern at the ongoing situation in Zimbabwe. Minister Baldwin urged Zimbabwe to stop disproportionate use of force by the security forces and investigate any cases of alleged human rights abuses. On 21 January the Foreign Secretary, in a public message to President Mnangagwa, urged him not to turn back the clock and to work with all Zimbabweans in dialogue for a better future.</p><p>We will continue to raise our serious concerns and push for a thorough investigation with the Government of Zimbabwe, through our Embassy in Harare and Ministerial interventions.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>We view EU restrictive measures as one of the tools to promote peace, democracy and the respect for the rule of law, human rights and international law. They are a tool used in conjunction with other methods, including political dialogue, as part of an integrated policy approach. They are targeted on specific individual and Zimbabwe Defence Industries and do no damage to the wider economy or the people of Zimbabwe.</p><p>The UK and our EU partners continue to assess the appropriateness of sanctions in light of recent developments. The crackdown on demonstrations in January 2019, as well as the disproportionate use of force by the authorities, called into question the Zimbabwean Government's commitment to uphold human rights and the rule of law. We do not publicise our partners to avoid putting them at risk.</p><p>The UK does not support any candidate or political party in Zimbabwe. We have made clear to the Government of Zimbabwe that opposition parties should be free to campaign peacefully. UK diplomats hold regular meetings with political leaders from all main parties. Our Ambassador last met with the main opposition The Movement for Democratic Change Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa on 16 January.</p> more like this

In 2016, we secured written agreement from the Government of Zimbabwe that payments would resume when the economic situation allows. The international trade in elephant ivory is currently banned under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). A proposal has been put forward by a small number of CITES Parties, including Zimbabwe, for consideration at the 18th meeting of CITES Conference of the Parties (CoP) to resume international trade in ivory from these countries. These proposals will be subject to robust challenge at the CoP before any decision.</p> more like this

I summoned the Zimbabwean Ambassador on 17 January to express our concern at the ongoing situation, urge the government to investigate any cases of alleged human rights violations and to restore access to the internet. I was pleased that the High Court of Zimbabwe ruled the shutdown unconstitutional on 22 January.</p><p>On 30 January I spoke to Foreign Minister Moyo, repeating our calls for an end to human rights violations and a full investigation.</p> more like this

British Embassy officials last met with Vice President Chiwenga in September 2018.</p><p>We have made our views clear to the Government of Zimbabwe following the January 2019 violence. Her Majesty's Ambassador to Zimbabwe last met Foreign Minister Moyo on 20 February and I spoke to him on 30 January. I reinforced our calls on the Government of Zimbabwe to investigate all allegations of human rights violations and urged them to follow the due process of law for all those arrested in connection to January's protests.</p> more like this
