	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 29/01/2020 answer text <p>The UK Government supports UN Global Sustainability Goals on road safety and has supported research to improve road safety and reduce the impact of road crashes on poor people in developing countries. The UK Government has invested £20 million through the Global Road Safety Facility through DFID and the Department of Health and Social Care. This facility has generated new evidence on road safety, and has influenced World Bank investments in roads. The facility succeeded in including Road Safety as a criteria in the Bank’s corporate Safeguarding Framework. Several other Multilateral Development Banks are now using this as a model. It is estimated by the World Bank that as a result of this work over 2,100 road deaths and injuries were avoided in developing countries in 2017.</p><p>DFID also works to share UK expertise on road safety with developing country governments including Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda. Research shows that restricting access to abortion services does not make abortions less common – it only serves to make them less safe, risking women’s and girls’ health and lives through dangerous, backstreet abortions. At least 8% of maternal deaths worldwide are caused by unsafe abortions. Millions more women and girls are left with injuries and disabilities as a result.</p><p> </p><p>The UK’s position is that safe abortion reduces recourse to unsafe abortion and thus saves lives, and that women and adolescent girls must have the right to make their own decisions about their sexual and reproductive health and well-being. We do not fund programmes which contribute directly or indirectly to sex-selective abortion. DFID has in place several measures to ensure the accountability of all UK aid, including our programmes that support access to safe abortion care. These include due diligence of all primary implementing partners, regular spot checks, a robust monitoring and evaluation system which includes beneficiary feedback and annual project reviews.</p><p>Sex-selective abortion is the result of deep-rooted discrimination against women and girls. In Afghanistan and Pakistan GPEI are working to reach children in inaccessible regions that have been missed by vaccination campaigns. They are also tackling misinformation campaigns that severely affect vaccine uptake. UK funding contributes significantly to these efforts.</p><p> </p><p>The UK are observers on the Polio Oversight Board and represent all state donors on the Strategy Committee, which gives us a position from which to influence the activities of the programme at a strategic level. The worst affected provinces are Kandahar, Helmand, Herat and Farah. More than 40 people are known to have died, and hundreds of others have been injured or are missing. According to the Government, more than 7,100 houses have been damaged and over 5,600 destroyed across Afghanistan. More than 50,000 people require humanitarian assistance.</p><p> </p><p>At present, the Afghan Government are leading efforts to respond. International organisations are helping them to assess the situation on the ground and respond directly with food, non-food items, hygiene kits, winter clothes and emergency shelter (tents). DFID is closely monitoring what is happening and we stand ready to assist as and when our support is requested or required.</p><p> </p><p>The UK is at the forefront of the international humanitarian response in Afghanistan. As a result of UK funding, up to two million Afghans received lifesaving assistance in 2018, including hundreds of thousands of Afghans affected by one of the worst droughts the country has ever faced. The UK is providing life-saving assistance to hundreds of thousands of Afghans affected by one of the worst droughts the country has ever faced, including vital food and shelter. We provided emergency food aid in July last year to 432,000 people to enable them to remain in their homes. UK Aid has also supported tents and urgent relief items for up to 260,000 people who are facing a severe winter away from their homes; cash transfers for 190,000 people to buy essential items; and special nutritious food for 90,000 children and pregnant women to prevent malnutrition. And, by contributing to the UN appeal, UK funds are reaching more people in need with food assistance. As the scale of the drought became clear over the course of the year, we increased our funding for the drought response to £35 million, bringing DFID’s total spend on the humanitarian response in Afghanistan to £67 million in 2018. Our assistance is based on need and supports the United Nations-led Humanitarian Response Plan in Afghanistan. In 2016 and 2017 the UK provided urgent additional funding to UNHCR to ensure refugees were provided with immediate assistance upon return, including to cover immediate food, shelter and transport costs. In 2018 there have been fewer returns from Pakistan compared to previous years, so the focus of our assistance has changed. In 2018 UK aid will provide humanitarian assistance for up to two million Afghan people. This includes lifesaving food, access to water, shelter, nutrition, healthcare and demining activities. It will also support people who have been displaced for a long time to integrate sustainably into local communities. As recently announced at the Geneva Conference on Afghanistan, we have increased our funding for the humanitarian response to £67 million this year. According to UNICEF this marks a fourfold increase to the previous year.</p><p> </p><p>DFID has invested in the Education Cannot Wait Global Fund which supports the Education in Emergencies Working Group led by the Ministry of Education in Afghanistan.
