We believe that societies which aim to guarantee freedom of religion or belief are more stable, prosperous and more resilient against violent extremism. We look to the Chinese authorities to provide comprehensive details of the circumstances surrounding his death. We have not made representations to the Chinese authorities on this specific case.</p><p>We are concerned by reports that a number of human rights defenders have died whilst in prison and allegations that they have been denied access to medical treatment. The blasphemy laws are used against people of all faiths although minority communities are disproportionately affected. Blasphemy laws are used against people of all faiths, although minority communities are disproportionately affected. Our concerns are reflected in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Annual Human Rights Report.</p><p>We regularly make clear our concerns about freedom of religion and belief and the protection of minority communities with the government of Pakistan. We do so at a senior level. During my visit to Pakistan last year, I raised our concerns about the treatment of religious minorities, including discrimination and violence against them, with the Federal Secretary of Pakistan's Ministry of Human Rights. We raise few individual cases. We focus on urging the government of Pakistan to fulfil its duty to uphold the rights of all Pakistan's citizens irrespective of religious identity. This includes raising concerns about discrimination and violence against Ahmadiyya Muslims in Pakistan. I raised the treatment of religious minorities, including the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, with the Ministry of Human Rights during my visit to Pakistan in November 2017. Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon discussed the issue of freedom of religion or belief, and the protection of religious minorities with Pakistan's Interior Minister in February 2018.</p><p>At the UN Periodic Review of Pakistan's human rights record in 2017, the UK urged Pakistan to strengthen protection of minorities, including by establishing an independent National Commission for Minorities. The Prime Minister discussed this issue with President Xi and Premier Li during her visit to China from 31 January to 2 February 2018.</p><p>The former First Secretary of State and Minister for the Cabinet Office, the Rt Hon. We called on the Chinese authorities to release evidence to reassure the international community of his current status and wellbeing.</p><p>We urge China to ensure that the restrictions on the Panchen Lama's freedom of movement and communication are lifted, so that he may select the career, education or religious life of his choosing.
