Average payments have increased year-on-year to meet these necessary costs. We have had to make difficult choices about welfare spending and it has not been possible to increase the £700 maximum for other costs. However we have made interest-free Social Fund Budgeting Loans available for funeral costs in addition to Funeral Expenses Payments.</p><p> </p><p>In 2016/17, approximately 27,000 Funeral Expenses Payments were paid worth around £38.6 million. After this initial contact an information discussion is held following which the offer of an SMI loan will be made. The claimant can continue to receive SMI as a benefit for up to 10 weeks following the date the loan offer is made to give them time to decide whether to accept the offer and for the loan payments to be put in place. The time it takes to allocate and process complaints varies depending on the volume of referrals received, the complexity of the cases on hand and the available investigative resource. The Office is currently experiencing high volumes of referrals as a direct result of the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign. Its resources are reviewed on an annual basis and additional resource has been provided for the 2018/19 financial year.
