NHS England has seen progress in a number of areas to implement the recommendations. For example the Pharmacy Integration Fund has supported a pilot in the North East of referral from NHS 111 to community pharmacies for minor illness and the national ‘stay well campaign’ continues to highlight the role of community pharmacy in this area. We are aware of locally commissioned schemes addressing hypertension. The Pharmacy Integration Fund is also supporting the roll out of clinical pharmacists in general practice and in care homes with additional training to award independent prescriber status.
more like this

This investment will improve patient care and access, and facilitate new ways of providing primary care.

Commissioners of primary medical care services monitor practice catchment areas to ensure that all areas of the country have primary medical care cover, and through an annual review of every primary medical care contract are aware of local primary medical care capacity and how this meets demand.

Practices are funded on a weighted population basis and therefore, where populations grow gradually, practices receive additional investment to take on new patients which allows them to grow to maintain services for patients. There has been a national trend in practices becoming larger, employing more staff and operating with a more diverse workforce in order to meet rising demand.

Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is investing in general practice to improve patients’ access to GP services and increase the range of services to help support patients manage their conditions. Measures include financial and educational support to help GPs run their surgeries more effectively and efficiently.

A key part of local plans to improve health and social care across the city is to make general practice more sustainable, more resilient and ensure it works efficiently and effectively for many years ahead. This will include integrating some services with other clinical specialists, for example pharmacists better supporting GPs, and helping GPs work more collaboratively. There are also a number of specific schemes in place as part of the CCG’s workforce strategy including the GP retention package and overseas recruitment.

star this property answer text
Minor ailment services are currently commissioned locally by the National Health Service according to need. However a national minor illness scheme is in development, building on a pilot digital minor illness referral service (DMIRS) that commenced last year in the North East. This scheme provides direct referrals from NHS 111 to community pharmacy. Three further DMIRS pilots, supported by the Pharmacy Integration Fund, are due to be launched by early autumn 2018, in Devon, London (in a phased approach), and East Midlands. The areas will be adopting the same model used in the North East with some minor adaptations dependent on the local NHS 111 case mix. An evaluation will inform any next steps for the project.
more like this

star this property answer text
Departmental officials are aware that there were some short term supply issues which affected the availability of olanzapine and quetiapine tablets in May/June 2017.

A major generic supplier of olanzapine tablets experienced some short term manufacturing issues which consequently meant other suppliers experienced an increase in demand at short notice, which they could not readily meet. However, the manufacturing issues were resolved quickly and the overall supply of olanzapine tablets improved within a few weeks.

In terms of quetiapine supply issues, this was caused by a major generic supplier, with large market shares of quetiapine tablets, discontinuing this product range without notifying the Department. This led to significant market disruption as other suppliers experienced a large increase in demand at short notice. However, suppliers were able to bring in additional supplies to cope with the extra demand and supplies improved by July 2017.

During this period, Departmental officials were in regular contact with all United Kingdom licensed suppliers of both quetiapine and olanzapine and worked closely with them to discuss their supply position and to ensure sufficient suppliers remained available to meet UK requirements.

We are not aware of any current supply issues affecting olanzapine and quetiapine and several suppliers have confirmed that supplies are readily available.
