star this property answer text <p>Teaching schools are outstanding schools which work with others to provide high-quality training and support in their area and make an important contribution to raising standards in schools. There are currently 691 designated teaching schools working with over 500 school partnerships (‘alliances’) across England. The government recognises the commitment and hard work of the headteachers and staff at these schools and the contribution they make.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>To ensure that teaching schools continue to deliver high-quality support, the National College for Teaching and Leadership undertakes a review of teaching schools whenever circumstances change, including when an Ofsted inspection results in the school no longer being judged to be outstanding. <br></p><p> </p><p>The review is undertaken in accordance with the ‘teaching schools review of designation policy’<em>, </em>published on GOV.UK at<em>: <br> </em><a href="http://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/384358/teaching-school-rod-policy.pdf" target="_blank">www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/384358/teaching-school-rod-policy.pdf</a></p><p><br> Over 100 alliances are led by more than one teaching school, further strengthening the sustainability of their support.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The Department does not publish data on the number of applicants to Initial Teacher Training. UCAS, who own this data, does release figures for applications to School Direct but not applicants, and an applicant can have up to three applications. The data is available at:</p><p><a href="https://www.ucas.com/corporate/data-and-analysis/ucas-teacher-training-releases" target="_blank">https://www.ucas.com/corporate/data-and-analysis/ucas-teacher-training-releases</a>.</p><p> </p><p>There were a total of 10,629 trainees on a School Direct course in 2016/17, and further details of how this breaks down can be found at: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/initial-teacher-training-trainee-number-census-2016-to-2017" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/initial-teacher-training-trainee-number-census-2016-to-2017</a></p><p>These trainees were recruited through 818 School Direct partnerships, each of which is formed of a minimum of five schools. We are unable to say how many schools are involved because some trainees do multiple placements during the year.</p><p> </p><p>The total cost of the scheme to the department for 2016 will not be available until after the end of the academic year when data submissions will be finalised and subsequently validated.</p>

star this property answer text <p>Early years providers play an important role in developing their workforce in line with Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The EYFS sets clear staffing and qualification requirements for the workforce. The skills of the workforce have increased significantly, with 87% of full day care staff holding level 3 qualification or higher (as of 2013).</p><p> </p><p>In order to meet the requirements of the EYFS, and to increase the skills and qualification level of the early years workforce, the Department for Education has:</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><ol><li><p>Developed a robust new set of standards for the Early Years Educator qualification at Level 3. Staff operating at Level 3 must also have GCSEs in English and maths at grade C or above. The department has recently made these GCSEs an entry to work requirement rather than an entry to training requirement. This has opened up training routes, ensuring more people with the right skills are able to join the early years workforce, including individuals on an apprenticeship.</p><p> </p></li><li><p>Introduced the Early Years Teachers Status for graduates who specialise in early years. star this property answer text <p>The Early Years Foundation Stage sets staffing and qualification requirements for early years providers. The government would like to see more trained graduates in the workforce, and we are supporting this by providing funding for course fees and bursaries to eligible trainees, and also funding for employers to support trainees.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The number of graduates in the workforce continues to rise, and between 2008 and 2013 the proportion of full day care staff with a degree or higher increased from 5% to 13%. The National Day Nursery Association’s June 2015 survey showed that 88% of settings employ a graduate Early Years Teacher. There are currently 15,962 individuals who have achieved Early Years Professional Status and Early Years Teacher Status.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Since the inception of early years initial teacher training in September 2013, we have recruited an overall number of 3206 trainees, of which 2358 have graduated and been awarded Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS). The 2014/15 cohort has 421 individuals still in training and awaiting an outcome. We have set high standards for individuals gaining Early Years Teacher Status as we want individuals of the highest calibre in these roles.</p><p> </p>

star this property answer text <p>The government is continuing to improve the capacity of schools to take the lead in training and developing teachers, including newly qualified teachers. This involves supporting schools to lead on the creation of high-quality training opportunities for teachers through the national network of teaching schools.</p><p> </p><p>The Department for Education also recently consulted on options to support teachers’ professional development. The consultation, entitled ‘A World-Class Teaching Profession’, ran from 9 December 2014 to 3 February 2015 and set out proposals designed to support teachers in improving the quality of professional development. The proposals included a fund for professional development and an offer of government support to those working on the establishment of a new, independent professional body – a College of Teaching.
