However, there has been less scope for competition in the supply market during this period of high and volatile wholesale gas and electricity prices.</p><p> </p><p>The Government wants a retail energy market that is both resilient and competitive, with companies able to invest in innovation and offer products and services that support decarbonisation. The Government is considering what reforms are needed to retail market regulation and will set out its plans ahead of the next price cap period<ins class="ministerial">.</ins></p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>The Government provides a range of support to eligible UK pensioners such as the Warm Home Discount, Winter Fuel Payments and Cold Weather Payments.</p><p> </p><p>In recognition that households across the UK are struggling to make their incomes stretch to cover the rising cost of living, the Government announced on 26 May a £15 billion package of cost-of-living support, in addition to the £22 billion already announced. As part of the Energy Bills Support Scheme package, pensioners in receipt of Winter Fuel Payments, will receive an extra £300 this year, in addition to a £400 rebate on all energy bills, from October and a £150 Council Tax rebate for households, including pensioners, living in bands A-D in England.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>The CMA completed its investigation into the energy market in 2016. It reported that default tariff customers of the large energy suppliers were paying an average of £1.4billion a year more than they would in a truly competitive market. In response, the Government legislated for Ofgem to introduce a cap on household default gas and electricity tariffs.</p><p> </p><p>Heat networks typically buy their energy through commercial contracts which, in the past, resulted in competitive heat prices for those on networks. Commercial contracts are not covered by the existing Default Tariff Price Cap. The Energy Security Bill will provide Ofgem with powers to regulate heat networks.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>In response to the increase in energy bills and the cost of living, around six million people who receive a non-means-tested disability benefit will receive a one-off Disability Cost of Living Payment of £150. This is only one part of the government’s £15bn package of support and sits alongside Cost of Living Payments of up to £650 for means-tested benefits recipients, payments to those eligible for Winter Fuel Payments and the extension of the Household Support Fund. This is on top of the £22bn the government has already announced to support households with the cost of living.</p><p> </p><p>In addition to specific targeted support, disabled people may also benefit from previously announced measures to help people tackle the cost of living, including:</p><ul><li>£150 council tax rebate</li><li>£400 discount from energy bills</li><li>cuts to the Universal Credit taper rate</li><li>frozen alcohol duty and fuel duty and</li><li>the further rise in the National Living Wage to £9.50 an hour from Apri2022.</li></ul><p> </p>
