star this property answer text We are concerned to hear that a Pakistan court has upheld the imposition of the death penalty in the case of Asia Bibi. We support the EU's recent statement of concern and hope that the verdict will be overturned on appeal. We regularly raise at the highest levels the misuse of blasphemy laws in Pakistan both against Muslims and against religious minorities. We have consistently pressed the Government of Pakistan on the issue of the death penalty and expressed our principled opposition to it in all cases. We will continue to raise these issues. more like this

star this property answer text
The British Embassy in Addis Ababa has been working closely with our international and multilateral partners, and through our bilateral programmes, to increase the levels of investment in Ethiopia. We note the $1.2bn World Bank Operation with Ethiopia was approved on 30 October. The Minister for Africa discussed prospects for this, and economic development more widely, when she represented the UK at our annual bilateral aid talks with Ethiopia on 5 October. During her visit, she announced a £66 million package of UK technical assistance to the economic reform process.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is now finalising the new roles to deliver the new strategic approach to Africa, announced by the Prime Minister on her regional visit. While it is not possible to give final figures at this stage, this is a significant uplift across our African network of posts and will include new roles focussed on supporting growth, trade and economic partnerships in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa more widely.

star this property answer text
The Government is grateful to the Swiss Chairmanship-in-Office of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) for organising this important conference in Berlin, to Germany for hosting it, and to the US for delivering a key note address. We recognise that, ten years on from the last concerted attempt to confront anti-semitism in OSCE member states, the phenomenon may be getting worse in several countries. The UK acknowledges the scale of the problem and has developed robust, evidence-based policies to combat it. The UK’s success in encouraging more and better reporting of hate crime was recognised by several delegations at the conference.

We also welcome the conference of civil society groups which took place the previous day, with active participation by a range of UK experts, including the Community Security Trust and members of the Board of Deputies of British Jews. We hope the OSCE as a whole will take note of, and act upon, their recommendations.
more like this
