	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 24/02/2015 answer text <p /> <p>Employers have had a duty to prevent illegal working since 1997 by carrying out specified document checks on people before they employ them. Since 2008, this duty has been underpinned by a civil penalty scheme. In May 2014, this Government introduced measures making it simpler to check the immigration status of potential employees and at the same time doubled the maximum civil penalty to £20,000 for the employment of an illegal worker. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 27/02/2015 answer text <p /> <p>Her Majesty’s Courts &amp; Tribunals Service (HMCTS) records the date of offence and date of trial in magistrates’ courts and the Crown Court. However, a number of cases do not go to trial, either because the defendant pleads guilty or the prosecution drop the case. A number of offences committed during 2014 will not yet have reached six or twelve months since receipt by HMCTS. The Transforming Summary Justice programme currently being rolled-out across England and Wales will ensure that cases set for trial in magistrates' courts are robustly case managed in advance of the trial date, reduce the number of unnecessary adjournments and increase the number of effective trials on the day.</p><p> </p><p>In current performance, overall, the last four years show an improvement in the time between the first listing of a case and its completion.
