The British Government remains concerned about the crisis in the North-West and
South-West regions of Cameroon. We welcome the convening of the National Dialogue
in Cameroon from 30 September to 4 October and the release of 333 prisoners arrested
in connection with the crisis. We hope these developments will build confidence among
all parties to engage in efforts to bring peace to the North-West and South-West regions.
Inclusive discussions about the root causes of people's grievances and follow up on
recommendations made at the National Dialogue are urgently needed to maintain momentum.
The UK continues to urge the Government of Cameroon to ensure that due process is
followed for all those who remain in detention. Freedom of expression is a fundamental
human right and must be respected at all times.
