The Government has, however, supported and continues to support a number of projects related to the reuse and recycling of batteries and hydrogen fuel cells used in electric vehicles. Examples include the ‘ICoNiChem: recycling rare materials in electric vehicles’ <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/case-studies/iconichem-recycling-rare-materials-in-electric-vehicles" target="_blank">study</a> and the <a href="https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=101896" target="_blank">Fuel Cell Recovery Project</a>.</p><p> </p><p>Electric vehicle batteries are banned from disposal to landfill and from incineration. Battery treatment facilities are required to meet certain recycling efficiencies under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009. Nothing has yet been agreed, and the Regulation still needs to be approved by the European Council and the European Parliament. The Government continues to engage with our European partners regarding the continuation of air connectivity and the Regulation remains under close review.</p><p> </p><p>The Department will continue to engage with stakeholders across the aviation industry. It is important to note that these measures would only apply in the event that the UK leaves the EU without having concluded a Withdrawal Agreement. The UK trade preference scheme will provide the same level of access as the current EU trade preference scheme by granting duty-free, quota-free access to the 48 Least Developed Countries covered by the Everything But Arms tier.</p><p>The way to end poverty and aid dependency is through inclusive economic growth, jobs, investment and trade. Unilateral preferences, including those provided through the Everything But Arms tier, are part of the UK’s wider efforts to reduce poverty. By providing access into a larger market, preferences support job creation and entrepreneurship within developing economies. They play a vital part in supporting the UK’s global poverty reduction efforts.
