answer text
The security and resilience of the UK's telecoms network is of paramount importance. Section 105a of the Communications Act 2003 requires telecoms operators to have appropriate measures in place to manage risks to the security of networks and services. The 5G Testbeds and Trials Programme has allocated £10 million to create capabilities where the security of 5G networks can be tested and proven, working with the National Cyber Security Centre.

Furthermore, the Government has recently announced a strengthened security framework for 5G infrastructure following a thorough, evidence-based review of the 5G supply chain, which can be found here: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/819469/CCS001_CCS0719559014-001_Telecoms_Security_and_Resilience_Accessible.pdf. This raises the security bar through new, strengthened security requirements that will ensure telecoms providers meet new challenges as 5G technology evolves. It also sets out plans for a strengthened legislative and regulatory framework to enforce these requirements.

answer text
The government’s priority has been to ensure a smooth and orderly withdrawal from the EU with a deal as soon as possible. The government has reached agreement with the EU on an extension until October 31st at the latest, with the option to leave earlier as soon as a deal is ratified. However, “No Deal” remains the legal default at the end of the extension period if a deal cannot be reached. As a responsible government we have been preparing for this possibility for almost three years to minimise any disruption in the event of no deal. The Treasury and the Bank of England together have all the tools of fiscal and monetary policy available to us, including the fiscal headroom the Chancellor has held in reserve.

more like this

answer text
Health Education England (HEE)’s technology enhanced learning (TEL) Programme has developed a national framework for the delivery of simulation-based education. This framework is now in place and being applied across the country.

Part of this work has involved extensive stakeholder engagement and through this engagement, a number of examples of where virtual reality has successfully been used to support learning have emerged. In particular, HEE East of England is piloting facilitated virtual reality learning for 1,200 Foundation Programme trainee doctors in 20 critical emergency scenarios in the East of England. This enables real time practice in a safe simulated environment with both facilitated supervised training and also personal unlimited access. A careful evaluation will be carried out, looking at both the trainee experience of learning through virtual reality and their subsequent improvement in confidence in urgent care management.

In addition, the TEL Programme has supported the development of a virtual reality lab in Torbay, which is now in its second year. Successful examples of virtual reality in distraction therapy have emerged, particularly in paediatrics and podiatry, with clear benefits to patients undergoing the clinical intervention and costs savings because of the reduction in general anaesthetics.

The TEL Programme has now set up an academic partnership with Leeds Institute and through this partnership, will be developing a set of principles for the use of virtual reality in education and training. Through this work, the TEL Programme will be developing a cohesive approach for evaluation of outcomes, which will then enable consistency in evidence gathering.
