The Government has a clear aspiration that once the apprentice route is established, up to 1,000 apprentice nurses could join the National Health Service each year.</p><p> </p><p>The registered nurse (degree) apprenticeship standard was approved for delivery on 9 May 2017. This confirmed that funding for Staying Put would continue to be paid to local authorities until the end of the Spending Review period. It also confirmed that the funding would be up-rated by 2% each year to take inflation into account. The amount of funding is therefore £23.3 million for the period 2018 to 2019 and £23.77 million for the period 2019 to 2020. It is not usual practice to ring-fence funds for particular topics or conditions. The Government remains committed to bringing the Act into force as soon as possible. This depends upon the creation of the necessary secondary legislation and administrative systems in the courts and the Office of the Public Guardian to define and support the working of the new procedure.</p><p> </p><p>Due to the demands of work on pressing government priorities, the officials responsible for the necessary legislation have not been able to complete preparation of the draft legislation as quickly as they had hoped. It will ensure resources are used more efficiently and kept in use for longer, and set out how we will work towards eliminating all avoidable waste by 2050. This is consistent with the EU’s Circular Economy Package and in some respects goes beyond it.</p><p> </p><p>As we develop the Resource and Waste Strategy we will explore whether new, more innovative targets can be developed that deliver clear benefits over those proposed by the EU. Should they be preferable, the UK Government will present proposals to the UK Parliament following withdrawal from the EU.
