answer text <p>The 1967 Abortion Act requires that two doctors certify in good faith that there are lawful grounds for an abortion, based on an understanding of the facts of a woman's case. Any change to this requirement would require a change in the Abortion Act and this is a matter for Parliament.</p><p> </p><p>The Department will be issuing guidance shortly to all those involved in abortion care about compliance with the Abortion Act.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>The Government has not developed a working definition of human eugenic practice.</p><p> </p><p>Article 51 of the European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights states that the instrument applies to Member States only when they are ‘implementing Union law'. This reflects the pre-Charter case law on the rights and principles that the Charter reaffirms.</p><p> </p><p>We have no set date for completion of consideration of the issues that relate to full ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Abortion on the grounds of gender alone is illegal.</p><p> </p><p>On 21 May 2013, the Department published analysis of birth ratios in the United Kingdom. This found that, when broken down by the mothers' country of birth including those born in China and India, birth ratios in no group are statistically different from the range that we would expect to see naturally occurring. The UK birth ratio is within normal limits; that is to say 105 male births per 100 female births. The full report can be found on the Gov.uk web site; enter ‘gender birth ratios'.</p><p> </p><p>However, the Department remains vigilant for anecdotal evidence of sex-selective abortion.</p><p> </p><p>The Department has not made an assessment of birth ratios or the incidence of sex-selective abortions in China and India.</p><p> </p> more like this
