answer text
On 1 September 2022, the Ministry of Defence rolled out a Wraparound Childcare scheme (WAC) across the UK to provide greater flexibility to Service personnel with children, following a successful pilot program. From the start of the 2022 Autumn term, WAC funding will be available to all eligible Service families with children aged 4 to 11 years, who are in school or being home schooled in the UK. If eligible, personnel can claim up to 20 hours per week of funding for each child that is attending before and after school care during term time. WAC is known as 'Out of School care' in Wales and 'School Aged Childcare' in Scotland.

Defence continues to work closely with the Department for Education, the Devolved Administrations and Local Authorities to ensure there are sufficient spaces and that where this might not be the case that this is highlighted appropriately.
more like this

Over £54m has been jointly invested into the Fund since 2016, which has been matched on at least a 1:1 basis by the delivery organisations, doubling the initial investment. A further £12m of DCMS and TNLCF funding was announced in July 2022.

The #iwill Fund contributes to the delivery of the National Youth Guarantee, which will also offer The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to all mainstream secondary schools in England, tackle non-military Uniformed Youth Group waiting lists and continue delivering the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme. All of these programmes provide volunteering opportunities for young people.

In addition, through the £7.4m Volunteering Futures Fund, DCMS is creating more volunteering opportunities to improve the accessibility of volunteering in arts, culture, sports, civil society, youth and heritage sectors. answer text
Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) is a government priority. VAWG is an unacceptable, preventable issue which blights the lives of millions.

One year on from the publication of the Tackling VAWG Strategy, we have made significant progress and delivered a number of key commitments to help ensure that women and girls are safe everywhere - at home, online, at work and in public spaces. This includes action to tackle the causes of these crimes. We have:

o supported the introduction of a new full-time National Policing Lead for VAWG, DCC Maggie Blyth, to help strengthen the police response;

o ratified the Istanbul Convention on 21 July 2022, demonstrating to women in the UK and to our partners overseas our commitment to tackling VAWG;

o launched the first phase of our national communications campaign, ‘Enough’, to challenge the harmful behaviours that exist within wider society, educate young people about healthy relationships and consent, and ensure victims can recognise abuse and receive support;

o announced that we will add VAWG to the Strategic Policing Requirement meaning it will be set out as a national threat for forces to respond to alongside other threats such as terrorism, serious and organised crime and child sexual abuse;

o allocated £55 million to communities through the Safer Streets Fund and Safety of Women at Night Fund, including for extra CCTV, streetlighting and work to change attitudes and work to preventing VAWG in public spaces at night;

o published a refreshed National Statement of Expectations and accompanying VAWG Commissioning Toolkit to outline the activity that local areas should undertake to ensure victims and survivors of VAWG get the help and support they need;

o criminalised virginity testing, to send a clear message that this practice is wholly unacceptable in our society;

o appointed joint Transport Champions to help make public transport safer for women and girls; and

o piloted a tool, StreetSafe, which enables the public to anonymously report areas where they feel unsafe.

In addition, in May 2022, the Home Office launched a competition on What Works to prevent violence against women and girls. This will provide multi-year funding to providers and be accompanied by extensive evaluation to increase our understanding of what works.

answer text
Since November 2019 the government has funded the LawtechUK programme, established to support the digital transformation of the UK legal sector. The programme is delivered by Tech Nation and brings together industry, regulators, the judiciary, academia and government to break down barriers to innovation and improve legal professionals’ awareness and understanding of technology. It has delivered 15 projects to date, including a sandbox to help innovators fast track transformative ideas into products, educational resources, and a ground-breaking feasibility study for how technology can help small businesses resolve disputes.

In August 2022 the government announced a further £4 million of funding for a second phase of support for lawtech. This funding will be used to build on the work delivered so far to increase innovation and adoption of lawtech in the delivery of legal services, support the growth of the lawtech sector in the UK, and enable English and Welsh law and the UK’s jurisdictions to become the foundation for emerging technologies.

answer text
The Government are committed to phasing out confinement systems and supporting the industry to do so, not least to underpin UK food security. However, as reiterated by the Minister for Farming, Fisheries and Food at the ‘End the Cage Age’ debate held in June, we do need to work carefully and sensitively with the pig and poultry sectors as any transition must be done with, rather than against, these industries.

This is an extremely challenging time for Britain’s farmers, with enormously increased input costs — of food, fuel and fertiliser — affecting almost all production systems to a greater or lesser extent, and of course for the general public who are faced with significant challenges around the cost of living.

So, any decisions by Government on this issue, including timing of consultations, must be carefully considered in light of these wider, and clearly highly important, priorities. We have a course of action in play and will progress with our plans to transition away from use of cages in farming systems as soon as the time is right.
