answer text
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is responsible for regulating compliance with data protection legislation. The ICO is an independent body sponsored within government by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

Government are currently modernising data protection laws in the UK through the Data Protection Bill to make them fit for purpose for our increasingly digital economy and society. The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force on 25th May 2018. All UK businesses together with all organisations that process personal data will be required to comply with this regulation and also the UK's full data protection regime as set out in the Data Protection Bill. The ICO provides guidance and support to UK organisations and have already published a number of resources on the Commissioner's website (ico.org.uk) to help organisations prepare. The ICO has: launched a dedicated helpline service for smaller organisations; updated its 'SME toolkit' to reflect the requirements of the GDPR; simplified its "12-step" GDPR preparation guidance; and published tailored guidance for charities.

answer text
Cancerous brain tumours are difficult to diagnose and often require immediate treatment. Adults with suspected brain and central nervous system cancers are urgently referred for an MRI scan of the brain for assessment1. For diagnosed patients, the survival statistics2 are:

- 14% of patients survive for ten years or more;

- 19% of patients survive for five years or more; and

- 40% of patients survive for one year or more.

Earlier diagnosis is a key priority for NHS England. We are investing £200 million in transformation funding for earlier diagnosis and better post-treatment care and support for cancer patients.

The National Cancer Programme has established a number of initiatives to support ambitions of improving earlier diagnosis including:

- The Accelerate, Coordinate, Evaluate (ACE) programme tests a new, multi-disciplinary diagnostic centre approach to diagnosing patients. The model is focussed on patients with vague or unclear but concerning symptoms, to ensure they receive a diagnosis as quickly as possible; and

- The Faster Diagnosis Standard aims to ensure that patients that are referred for an investigation with a suspicion of cancer, including brain tumours, are diagnosed or have cancer ruled out within 28 days, and we are continuing to move towards national implementation, with a new measurement system going live in hospitals from 1 April 2018.

The Government is also supportive of HeadSmart, a United Kingdom-wide campaign to reduce diagnosis times of childhood brain tumours. The campaign aims to raise national awareness of the common signs and symptoms of a brain tumour in children and young people by equipping parents, the public and healthcare professionals with the information they need.

Finally, last week the Government announced a package, alongside Cancer Research UK and Brain Tumour Research, to boost research and investment into brain tumours. We will commit £20 million, through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), over the next five years – with the aim of doubling this amount once new high-quality research proposals become available. Cancer Research UK has also confirmed £25 million over five years in major research centres and programmes dedicated to brain tumours. This research will make new discoveries that the NIHR can then translate into treatments for patients.

Notes:

1National Institute for Health and Care Excellence – https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng12/chapter/1-recommendations-organised-by-site-of-cancer#brain-and-central-nervous-system-cancers

2Cancer Research UK - http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/health-professional/cancer-statistics/statistics-by-cancer-type/brain-other-cns-and-intracranial-tumours#heading-Zero

answer text
Taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) drivers are eligible for an enhanced DBS certificate with check of both barred lists for licensing purposes. This is the highest level of check available and will also include details of convictions and cautions recorded on the Police National Computer and any locally held police intelligence information that may be relevant to the role. It is for licensing authorities to make a decision, taking into account any information available including that disclosed by the DBS, as to whether an individual is suitable to hold a licence.

There are also certain circumstances, such as undertaking specific contracted work driving children, which fall into regulated activity (with children). A taxi or PHV driver who is in regulated activity may be barred from this work if they pose a risk or harm or have caused harm to a child or vulnerable adult. A barred person is prevented by law from working with children or vulnerable groups.

The Government will shortly consult on statutory guidance to be issued to licensing authorities, this will propose a range of standards and measures that it considers appropriate to the ‘fit and proper’ assessment and minimises any potential risk to taxi and PHV passengers.

answer text
We are committed to supporting the booming UK tech sector. The UK is already a world-leading digital economy with the sector contributing over £116Bn per year in gross value added and is growing twice as fast as the wider economy. Our ground-breaking digital strategy, published in March, set out how we intend to make the UK the best place to start and grow a digital business, and we are already delivering on those aims.

In November, our industrial strategy included commitments to boost spending on the infrastructure of the future, spreading 5G digital connectivity right across the country, raising investment in research and development, and improving skills by investing in maths, digital and technical education - all of which will support the continued success of the tech sector.

In the Autumn Budget, we also announced a further investment of £21 million to expand Tech City UK into a nationwide network – Tech Nation – aimed at accelerating the growth of the digital tech sector across the country. Tech Nation will support 40,000 entrepreneurs and up to 4,000 start-ups as they scale their businesses. Tech Nation will build on the success of its London and Northern clusters, delivering support for digital tech businesses in 11 cities across the UK. This will develop new regional clusters to boost burgeoning tech firms in cities such as Belfast, Cardiff and Newcastle.

The Budget also announced a doubling of the Enterprise Investment Scheme for knowledge intensive companies - including in the tech sector - and announced a 10-year action plan to unlock over £20 billion to finance growth in innovative firms.
