Mining has also been affected, though to a lesser extent. As a result, the World Bank has reduced growth forecasts in Sierra Leone and Liberia by 3.3 percentage points (pp) and 3.4pp respectively. We spent £51 million in 2010/11, rising to £68 million in 2013/14. This compares to £44 million in 2009/10. In response to the recent Ebola outbreak the UK is leading the international response and has rapidly scaled up its support for Sierra Leone, committing £125m to contain, control and defeat the disease. Women are the primary health care providers for their families and communities, form the bulk of healthcare workers in hospitals as nurses and cleaners, and are often responsible for handling female bodies for burial which brings them into direct contact with the disease. Oil spills in the Niger Delta occur because of criminal activity as well as oil company operations. We continue to closely monitor the situation in the Delta and raise pollution both with the Nigerian government and the oil companies.</p><p>The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my hon. Friend the Member for Boston and Skegness (Mr Simmonds), saw the environmental degradation in the Delta first hand during his visit to Nigeria in February 2014. While a British Embassy representative, in his capacity as a political analyst, did observe Mr Hall’s hearing on 2 July, the Embassy has no role in accompanying Mr Hall to meetings related to his legal dispute.</p><p>We cannot interfere in the judicial process of another country and we cannot act as legal representatives for British nationals. Our staff are not legally trained and they therefore cannot comment on proceedings or provide interpretation.
