answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 02/07/2015 answer text <p>Most drugs required to treat Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are donated free of charge by pharmaceutical companies. However, in some cases the drugs need to be purchased. In these cases we work to secure good value for money in our procurement and also encourage flexible approaches to increase availability, such as licensing and technology transfer partnerships with low-cost, high-quality generic manufacturers.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>DFID also funds research into new NTD treatments through Product Development Partnerships (PDPs). PDPs use patents flexibly to ensure products are available at lowest possible cost. This includes negotiating royalty-free access to patented products and developing products as ‘open source’ so that anyone can use them, with requirements for distribution at the lowest possible cost. This is through a range of initiatives, including development of new treatment and diagnostic products, as well as implementation research. A proportion of this includes programmes promoting integrated responses to tackling TB-HIV co-infection.</p><p> </p><p>The Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria is the main financing mechanism for the UK’s support to TB and HIV. The trade in minerals can also be a vital economic resource for conflict-affected and high-risk areas. The challenge is to ensure supply chains are properly managed to address the risk of funding armed conflict, widespread violence or other forms of harm to people, such as their displacement. This is in line with our G8 commitments. We have regular meetings with UK industry and representative bodies to discuss and encourage the uptake of this guidance. The UK is playing an active role in discussions on the EU Regulation concerning the responsible sourcing of minerals. This aims to give political support to the guidance. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 03/07/2015 answer text <p>The recent “Speak Up for the Love of” climate lobby in Westminster – along with interventions from the Pope and other faith leaders on climate change shows that all sectors of society recognise that climate change is a serious threat.</p><p>The Papal Encyclical raises a number of important issues, including – the reduction of global poverty, the protection of the planet, and a process of sustainable development which will lead to a healthier life for all.</p><p>The UK is already acting to address these challenges. Our commitment to the 0.7% target for our international aid budget is a concrete sign of the UK’s solid support for sustainable development for all.</p><p>The UK Government also recognises the importance of tackling climate change. We were the first country to put in place a legally binding long-term target, and we have established five year carbon budgets for reducing emissions into the late 2020s.</p><p>Internationally we are leading the charge. The EU is on track to meet its commitments for 2020 and has agreed an ambitious emissions reduction target of at least 40% by 2030.
