However, there is some evidence that in marine environments cigarette butts contribute to microplastics. The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science is working to look at the impact of cigarette butts in the marine environment. Our position on Hamas has not changed: Hamas must renounce violence, recognise Israel and accept previously signed agreements. We call on those in the region with influence over Hamas to encourage Hamas to take these steps. Hamas’s ongoing decision to embrace violence and reject the Quartet Principles lies at the heart of the Gazan tragedy. Whilst Palestinians have the right to peaceful protest, we have been clear that Hamas exploited the border protests for their own benefit. Their incitement of violence is unacceptable. We successfully led the charge to ban shark finning across the EU, and we continue to press for stronger international controls. When sharks are caught we support the EU position of landing the full body.</p><p> </p><p>While we are a member of the EU it is not possible to introduce additional restrictions on the import of shark fins.
