The Government and the retail sector recognise that action is needed to ensure the sector thrives. The creation of the Retail Sector Council demonstrates this commitment to the sector’s continued success.</p><p> </p><p>My Rt hon Friend the Prime Minister recently announced an additional 50 towns will benefit from the £1 billion Future High Streets Fund, taking the total to over 100. The extension to the shortlist comes on the back of the £3.6 billion Towns Fund announced last month, which included an additional £325 million for the Future High Streets Fund, taking the overall Fund to £1 billion as the Government looks to drive forward local growth.</p><p> </p><p>A number of other measures have already been taken to support our high streets, including the creation of the High Streets Task Force to support local leaders in delivering ambitious plans.</p><p> </p><p>Through the planning system we are helping to support changes to high streets, making it easier for them to adapt, with a wider range of retail, residential and other uses. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 09/08/2019 answer text <p>The shipping industry is understandably concerned about recent regional tensions and attacks on international shipping in the Persian Gulf. These events culminated in Iran's illegal seizure of the Stena Impero, a UK-flagged tanker, on 19 July.</p><p>It is vital to uphold the principle of freedom of navigation and ensure that merchant shipping can pass through the Gulf safely. That begins with clear information flows between Government and the shipping industry. The Department for Transport (DfT) regularly reviews threats and reporting worldwide and issues the most up to date advice available to operators to assist with their risk assessments, to enable their safety while travelling overseas.</p><p>In late July, following the illegal seizure of the Stena Impero, the Royal Navy began to accompany British-flagged ships in the region to provide reassurance to the shipping industry. In parallel, we have been talking to allies and partners about the threat to international shipping in the region. On 5 August, the Government announced its decision to join an international maritime security construct in the Gulf, focused on freedom of navigation and restoring safe passage for shipping. The mission involves the Royal Navy working with international partners to accompany merchant vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, building on existing cooperation which has seen Royal Navy vessels accompany 50 merchant ships through the Strait since 24 July.</p><p>Our participation in this construct is focused entirely on the issue of reassuring the shipping industry and deterring further attacks. The Government has not changed its wider policy towards Iran. We remain committed to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which is the best way to prevent a nuclear armed Iran. This is not connected to the United Kingdom's departure from the European Union.</p><p> </p><p>Freedom of navigation is in every nation's interest; it is unacceptable to illegally seize a ship going about legitimate business in an internationally recognised shipping lane. Some studies suggest that artificial intelligence could add 10% to the UK GDP by 2030. Other studies highlight the benefits that artificial intelligence and automation could bring to specific sectors.</p><p> </p><p>For example, the independent “Made Smarter” review, published in October 2017, estimated that digital technologies, such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and additive manufacturing, could add £455bn to the UK manufacturing economy over the next decade.</p><p> </p><p>For that reason, under our modern Industrial Strategy, we have taken the following steps to support automation where and when it is appropriate and is for the betterment of society:</p><p> </p><ul><li>£558m of the £1.7bn Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund is related to automation;</li><li>Investment across UKRI partners for robotics, autonomous systems and AI for physical systems since 2014 totals £366m and has attracted a further £153m leverage from private sector or other public bodies;<br></li><li>The AI Sector Deal, published in April 2018, is worth up to£950m and is already delivering pioneering skills and data initiatives to create the jobs and markets of tomorrow; <br></li><li>Government is backing Made Smarter as our key industrial digitalisation programme, including through up to £121m investment into the Made Smarter digital manufacturing challenge to increase manufacturing productivity by up to 30%;</li><ul><li>In addition, Government is investing £20m into the Made Smarter North West pilot for adoption of digital technology, which includes robotics and automation;</li><li>Growth Hubs provide an important one stop shop for businesses seeking to improve their productivity. The £20m Made Smarter North-West Pilots will engage 3,000 SME manufacturers across the north west to improve their productivity, administered through Growth Hubs; and <br></li></ul><li>The UK’s Catapult network helps bridge the gap between businesses and the expertise of the UK’s world-class research in automation. Friend for Runnymede and Weybridge, announced in his budget speech in October 2018, that we have been seeking views from a range of employers on the operation of the levy after 2020.</p><p>Over the past few months, we have used a number of channels, including a survey and regional roundtables across England, to work with a range of different employers, providers and representative organisations. We will continue to listen to the views of employers and providers, and use this evidence to support our planning for the forthcoming Spending Review.</p><p>To further support employers to make a long-term, sustainable investment in training, we have increased the amount that levy-paying employers can transfer to other employers from 10% to 25%. We continue to engage Canada to seek to achieve this at the earliest opportunity, and both sides are committed to a strong trading relationship moving forwards.</p><p> </p><p>If the UK leaves the EU without a deal, the UK will implement a temporary tariff which aims to minimise costs to business and mitigate price impacts on consumers. However, this will be temporary, applying for up to 12 months. The first and second Life Sciences Sector Deals have reiterated the Government’s commitment to unlock over £20 billion of patient capital investment over 10 years and increase the UK’s R&amp;D spend to reach 2.4% of GDP by 2027.</p><p> </p><p>In addition to this, our recent UK Bioeconomy Strategy sets out a framework for how government, industry and academia can work together to capitalise on our world class research, development and innovation base to grow the bioeconomy.
