<p>Those with sickle cell disease have been identified as being at increased risk
of severe illness from COVID-19, and we are strongly advising them to rigorously follow
shielding measures in order to keep themselves safe.</p><p>Shielding is a measure
to protect people who are clinically extremely vulnerable by minimising all social
interaction with others. Those who are extremely vulnerable are strongly advised to
stay at home at all times and avoid any face-to-face contact for at least 12 weeks.
Please note that this period of time could change.</p><p>NHS England will be in direct
contact with those who are at very high risk of severe illness from coronavirus to
provide further advice. More information on shielding is available at the following
