answer text
The legal profession in England and Wales operates independently of government. The responsibility for regulating the sector sits with the approved regulators, overseen by the Legal Services Board (LSB). The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is responsible for regulating the professional conduct of solicitors, as well as most law firms in England and Wales. The SRA’s role involves protecting clients and the public.

The SRA works closely with firms to ensure that consumers’ interests are protected. Their website provides clear guidance for firms that are falling into administration and warns that they will intervene if consumers’ interests are at risk: https://www.sra.org.uk/solicitors/guidance/closing-down-your-practice/.

The SRA also provides guidance for consumers affected by their law firm’s closure: https://www.sra.org.uk/consumers/problems/solicitor-closed-down/intervention/.

The Legal Ombudsman (LeO) is also able to support consumers with concerns about law firms who are no longer operational. Their website provides information with regards to the different routes available for consumers depending on their personal circumstances https://www.legalombudsman.org.uk/for-consumers/factsheets/complaining-about-closed-service-providers/.

Firms that fall into administration have a duty to make former clients aware. Notably, there are requirements in respect of the advertising and publication of an insolvency so that creditors and other interested parties are made aware. Further detail on this can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/technical-guidance-for-official-receivers/4-publication-of-insolvency-information.

answer text
Fair and competitive digital markets sit at the heart of the government’s strategy on press sustainability. Central to our plans in this area is our pro-competition regime for digital markets, which will include an enforceable code of conduct to rebalance the relationship between publishers and platforms. No decisions have been taken on this yet but we expect to launch our consultation later in the year.

Given the global nature of digital technologies and markets, we recognise that we will be most effective if we work together. We therefore continue to monitor developments in this area internationally and to engage with other governments to understand their approaches.

We are discussing our approach to press sustainability in the context of digital markets with international partners through bilateral engagement and as part of our G7 presidency. The Secretary of State has raised the issue of press sustainability with his G7 counterparts with a view to promoting competitive, innovative digital markets while protecting the free speech and journalism that underpin our democracy and precious liberties.

answer text
The Government is doing all that it can to help those caught in the path of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The Government has been responding to the humanitarian needs as they have been identified by our teams on the ground and the local authorities. To date, almost 180 tonnes of DFID relief items have either arrived or been procured in the region, including much needed food, water, shelter kits, and solar lanterns. Recent assessments indicate that markets are opening in the region and we are keen to support these. The UK is funding the Pan American Health Organisation – the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organisation – to help meet the health needs of affected populations, including any specific issues related to infant feeding. DFID will continue to work closely with the local authorities to identify their needs and prioritise our response accordingly.
more like this

answer text
The Government recognises the importance of the UK oil and gas industry to our economy and energy needs. Parliamentary business did not allow DECC Minsters to attend Offshore Europe but, as it is a key priority, the Oil and Gas Authority and DECC Officials played a leading role and we continue to maintain a dialogue with operators and other industry stakeholders. The Energy Minister’s first official visit was to Aberdeen to see first-hand what the industry is achieving even in these difficult times. She continues to visit and meet with many in the sector.

more like this
