answer text
The Ministry of Defence, the lead Government Department for the refurbishment of the Wideawake runway, continues to liaise closely and regularly with the US Department of Defense and State Department regarding their plans for the interim repair work and a full resurfacing programme. The UK Government continues to work with the US to scope options to bring forward the refurbishment, but due to the remote nature of Ascension Island options are limited by logistical constraints.
more like this

question text To ask Her Majesty’s Government what representations they are making to the government of Turkey about the impact on the civilian population of current military operations in Lice and adjoining neighbourhoods in southeast Turkey; and whether they plan to propose a fact-finding visit to the region by the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent to investigate reports of widespread displacement of people from their homes. more like this

answer text
The Turkish Government have said that over 300,000 people have fled their homes in the region. Our thoughts are with the victims of the PKK terrorist attacks, and the civilians who have been caught up in the violence. The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond), and the Minister for Europe, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Aylesbury (Mr Lidington), and our Ambassador to Turkey, have discussed with the Turkish government the importance of respecting human rights and avoiding civilian casualties in the fight against terrorism. We believe the first responsibility for investigating any alleged violations falls to Turkey; and that the PKK needs to cease violence in order to create the conditions for political resolution of the difficulties in the south east.
more like this

answer text
The Conflict, Security and Stability Fund (CSSF) provides direct funding to both the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect and the joint UN office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect. This funding assists these organisations in their work to consolidate the concept of the Responsibility to Protect by continuing to build the institutional architecture to prevent mass atrocity crimes and to strengthen the capacity of countries, regional and sub-regional organisations and civil society to protect populations. In addition, the CSSF funds a wide range of activities regionally that, while not always explicitly labelled as atrocity prevention, nonetheless contribute to the prevention of atrocities. These include projects on preventing sexual violence, reducing intergroup tensions, strengthening justice systems and the rule of law, security sector reform, disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration.
more like this

answer text
We want to see more and more people using public transport - one of the key ways of encouraging this is to make sure it is a safe option. The transport industry, local authorities, the police and others are already investing in, and undertaking, wide-ranging initiatives to improve the personal security of public transport passengers and staff and to keep our public transport systems as low crime environments.

However, the Government is not readily able to increase passenger services in commercial transport markets. For example, decisions about bus services outside London are largely a matter for the private sector. Equally, it is difficult to see that any such increase would have a positive effect on matters of personal security.

more like this
