Through the programme, 260 schools will be rebuilt or have their condition needs met by the Education Funding Agency (EFA).</p><p> </p><p>Under the Priority School Building Programme we have now signed construction contracts for 63 schools.</p><p> </p><p>8 schools have opened in new buildings since October 2014. This brings the total number of schools open in new buildings to 14. The National Offender Management Service (NOMS) promotes participation in activities supervised and organised as part of an establishment’s agreed PE programme. Prison Service Instruction (PSI) 58/2001 <em>Physical Education for Prisoners</em> specifies the requirement for prisons to offer a range of sport and gym based activity for a minimum of two and half hours a week.</p><p> </p><p>Additionally, the NOMS’ Incentives and Earned Privileges (IEP) scheme covers a range of privileges including how prisoners may earn additional time outside of their cells to engage in activities (other than work, education, treatment interventions or religious services) such as PE. Prisons are encouraged to provide a range of physical activities that suit the particular population balance within resources/facilities available.</p><p> </p><p>It is also important to note that the design for the new Secure College Pathfinder includes enhanced sports facilities, including a running track, indoor gym hall and gym classroom. The range of facilities reflects the importance we place on physical education, sport and outdoor activities as part of an environment which is suitable for young people and an integral part of a sound and challenging education.</p><p> </p><p>Specific data on the number of hours a prisoner engages in physical activity is not available as this varies by individual prison and prisoner depending on the IEP level the prisoner is on, the behaviour of the individual, the availability of constructive activities and supervisory staff.</p><p> </p><p>NOMS recognises the importance physical activity plays in the overall well-being of prisoners and the effect PE can have on supporting other programmes designed to reduce offending behaviour.</p> answering member constituency South West Bedfordshire answering member printed Andrew Selous question first answered 09/12/2014 17:50:19 answering member 1453 label Biography information for Andrew Selous

answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 08/12/2014 answer text <p>My Department worked very closely with criminal justice organisations and other stakeholders before publishing “<em>Our Commitment to Victims” </em>on 15 September 2014.</p><p> </p><p>My Rt Hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Justice and I have listened to the views of the Victims’ Panel, which we set up so that those who have been affected by crime can tell us directly how the criminal justice system could better serve victims. We have also worked closely with the Victims’ Commissioner since her appointment.</p><p> </p><p>My Department also developed “<em>Our Commitment to Victims”</em> in close cooperation with other Government Departments, the Crown Prosecution Service, the police, and the criminal justice inspectorates.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>Key stakeholders including the Bar Council and the Law Society, and representatives of Victim Support’s Witness Service contributed to my Department’s report, ‘<em>Review of ways to reduce distress of victims in trials of sexual violence</em>’, published on 31 March 2014, which formed the requirement for publicly funded advocates to undertake approved specialist training on working with vulnerable victims and witnesses announced in “<em>Our Commitment to Victims</em>”.</p><p>In our response to the “<em>Getting it right for Victims’ and Witnesses</em>” public consultation, published in 2012, we said we would look at the options for a Victims’ Law but that reform must begin with a more effective Victims’ Code. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 08/12/2014 answer text <p>The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) conduct a number of different activities to monitor the quality of testing at MOT Garages. These range from re-inspecting vehicles that have just been tested through to conducting mystery shopper type activities.</p><p><br>DVSA use a mechanism to target its resource to those MOT Garages that present the greatest risk profile. The type of activity conducted is based on that which is best suited for the identified risk. These activities can range from an educative type support to a more stringent enforcement approach. <br><br>Where poor quality testing has been identified an assessment is carried out and, again, the approach is designed to be proportionate to the need - focused on best ensuring test quality. This could include on-site support or redirected additional training. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 05/12/2014 answer text <p>We are not able, in the time available, to assess how many schools have received the pupil premium in total since its introduction in 2011 as this data is not held in the format requested. However, in the 2013-14 financial year, 19,986 schools attracted funding due to having one or more pupils who had been registered for free school meals at any point in the previous six years. There were also 1,349 schools (maintained special schools, special academies, pupil referral units (PRUs) or Alternative Provision academies) for which the local authority received any pupil premium funding due, in line with the conditions of grant. These figures do not take into account schools receiving pupil premium plus for looked after children, as this funding was also allocated to local authorities to distribute.</p><p> </p><p>The gap in pupils achieving Level 4 or above in key stage 2 reading and mathematics has narrowed from 19.3 to 16.2 percentage points between 2011 and 2013. The gap in pupils achieving at least five good GCSEs including English and mathematics has narrowed from 27.4 to 26.7 percentage points over the same period.</p><p> </p><p>Whilst it is too soon to see significant evidence of the impact of the policy on the national attainment statistics, our assessments of the policy show an improving picture. The first cohort started training in January 2014 with 41 trainees; the second started in September 2014 with 54 trainees. Cohort one attracted 982 applications, cohort 2 attracted 250. In total 1,232 Service Leavers have applied for the Troops to Teachers programme.
