answer text <p>The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has received just over 7,000 emails from members of the public in relation to its review of Whirlpool’s actions, arising from a Which? correspondence campaign and a further five not initiated by the Which? campaign.</p><p>In the current phase of its ongoing investigation, OPSS is following up with individual consumers who have provided relevant information to ensure that any evidence they hold can be recorded and analysed as incident data. This includes where information has referred to us by third parties, including from the consumer group Which?.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Chief Executive of the Office for Product Safety and Standards met senior Whirlpool officials in Birmingham on 2nd May to discuss their response to the requirements placed upon them by OPSS following the review of Whirlpool’s tumble dryer modification programme. He advised them on steps necessary to fulfil their obligations. The investigation remains on-going as Whirlpool address these requirements.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The role of the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) is to hold businesses to account for their responsibility for consumer safety. OPSS will continue to scrutinise Whirlpool’s compliance with all of its obligations in regard to the affected tumble dryers.</p><p> </p><p>The Government published the findings of the review on 4th April and OPSS issued a Decision Letter setting out further actions for Whirlpool to take. We do not plan to reopen this review which formed part of OPSS ongoing work to hold Whirlpool to account.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Office for Product Safety and Standards review focussed on engineering assessment of Whirlpool tumble dryers and expert analysis of data including fire and incident data from Fire and Rescue Services, Which? and Whirlpool. It also reviewed whether Whirlpool’s consumer outreach programme was adequate.</p><p>The review included input from scientific, legal and product safety experts including from the Government’s Health and Safety Laboratory and the BEIS Chief Scientific Advisor.</p><p>Interviews with consumers did not form part of the review.</p><p> </p> more like this

The Office for Product Safety and Standards is not aware of any evidence of lint fires attributed to a failure in the modification. answer text <p>The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has published specific requirements for Whirlpool to act on and issued a Decision Letter telling Whirlpool that the company must: improve its management of risk; set up a more rigorous system of quality assurance to ensure modifications are correctly installed; and reach affected consumers in more creative ways to minimise the risk of faulty machines still being in people’s homes.</p><p> </p><p>OPSS will monitor Whirlpool’s actions against these requirements.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) is currently reviewing the corrective action taken by Whirlpool in respect of certain models of tumble dryer and the results of the review will be published when completed.</p><p>The level of risk for affected models is currently assessed as low and OPSS is keeping this under continuous review. The advice to consumers is that they should not use affected machines until they have been modified by Whirlpool.</p> more like this
