answer text
This Government stood on a manifesto commitment to increase tree planting across the UK to 30,000 hectares per year by 2025. This is in line with Committee on Climate Change recommendations, and we are working with the devolved administrations to achieve this target.

We will set out plans to increase planting in England through a new England Tree Strategy, which we have recently consulted on. We will deploy the £640M Nature for Climate Fund, agreed in the March 2020 Budget, to do so. answer text
Trees have a crucial role in the pathway to net zero, so the Government has committed to increase tree planting across the UK to 30,000 hectares per year by 2025. As forestry is a devolved matter, we will work with the devolved administrations to achieve this.

In England, we have launched a consultation on a new England Tree Strategy, setting out proposals to plant more trees for the climate and nature. The Strategy will support delivery of the £640 million Nature for Climate Fund, increasing tree planting in England throughout this parliament.

This will build on our existing grants, such as Countryside Stewardship and the Woodland Carbon Fund, which already support landowners to buy, plant and maintain saplings, capturing carbon for years to come.
more like this

answer text
The Government does not offer any direct support to plant mature trees. The Government recognises that planting larger older trees can be a key element in landscaping urban development and an important component of green infrastructure. However, the transportation of mature trees and the soil associated with their roots is a significant pathway in the transportation and establishment of tree pests and diseases, such as Oak Processionary Moth. Therefore the Government strongly recommends that those planting mature trees should source trees that have been grown in the UK or supplied from nurseries with adequate biosecurity procedures in place.

more like this

Individual administrations within the UK determine their own ambitions for tree planting.

In England, we encourage tree planting by championing sector-led initiatives, such as Grown in Britain and the Roots to Prosperity strategy, in their work to grow demand for wood from ground level up, developing the woodland economy. We also support the Woodland Carbon Code to help to attract private investment in woodland creation.

Grants are available from the Forestry Commission under the EU funded Woodland Creation Grant in the Rural Development Programme for England.
