answer text <p>Teaching schools are outstanding schools which work with others to provide high-quality training and support in their area and make an important contribution to raising standards in schools. There are currently 691 designated teaching schools working with over 500 school partnerships (‘alliances’) across England. The government recognises the commitment and hard work of the headteachers and staff at these schools and the contribution they make.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>To ensure that teaching schools continue to deliver high-quality support, the National College for Teaching and Leadership undertakes a review of teaching schools whenever circumstances change, including when an Ofsted inspection results in the school no longer being judged to be outstanding. <br></p><p> </p><p>The review is undertaken in accordance with the ‘teaching schools review of designation policy’<em>, </em>published on GOV.UK at<em>: <br> </em><a href="http://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/384358/teaching-school-rod-policy.pdf" target="_blank">www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/384358/teaching-school-rod-policy.pdf</a></p><p><br> Over 100 alliances are led by more than one teaching school, further strengthening the sustainability of their support.</p>

answer text <p>The Department for Education uses the national Teacher Supply Model (TSM) to assess the need for initial teacher training (ITT) entrants each year. <br> <br> School Direct is an opportunity for schools in all areas to recruit and train the teachers that they need. For 2016/17, the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) listened to feedback from schools and universities and responded to recruitment challenges by moving to a more open approach which will provide School Direct lead schools and ITT providers with greater flexibility to respond to local conditions.<br> <br> The viability of individual courses at secondary level are down to a mixture of local and institutional circumstances, including the number of applicants and the degree to which ITT providers engage in School Direct in partnership with schools.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The department does not hold data on the percentage of primary teachers professionally trained through recognised three-year teacher training courses or one-year postgraduate courses. The department does hold information on primary trainee teachers who were awarded qualified teacher status (QTS).</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>In the 2012 to 2013 academic year, 28% of those awarded QTS in England trained through an undergraduate programme. 72% trained through a postgraduate programme. This has changed from 37% and 63% respectively in the 2004 to 2005 academic year.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Undergraduate courses are typically three or four years. answer text <p>Figures published by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service on 28 May 2015 show that the Department for Education is on course to exceed its recruitment target for primary trainee teachers. Good progress is also being made in recruiting secondary trainees.</p><p> </p><p>The department has increased bursaries and scholarships to up to £25,000 and is paying a £5,000 salary bonus to mathematics, physics and computing trainees on our School Direct salaried scheme. The Prime Minister announced on 11 March 2015 further investment of £67 million over the next five years to recruit an extra 2,500 mathematics and physics trainee teachers and retrain 15,000 existing teachers.</p><p> </p> more like this
