answer text <p>In the Educational Excellence Everywhere White Paper, the Government committed to ‘investigate, fund and evaluate approaches to help the brightest students in state schools to fulfil their potential’.</p><p>The Government is currently consulting on plans which will help to create more opportunities for all pupils, including the most able, through proposals to increase the number of good schools places, including selective places. In addition, Departmental officials are assessing the best ways to support the most academically able pupils across the full range of state schools, particularly those from the most disadvantaged backgrounds. answer text <p>The Government published a full Equality Analysis of the impact of freezing the student loan repayment threshold on 25 November 2015. This followed a public consultation that took place from 22 July 2015 to 14 October 2015.</p><p>All borrowers whose earnings are above the repayment threshold will pay around £6 per week more (in nominal terms) by 2020/21. answer text <p>As of 13 December 2016, 1,342 customers are awaiting an immigration status check with the Home Office before their eligibility can be decided.</p><p> </p><p>The Home Office works to an agreement to confirm decisions on eligibility for student funding within 10 working days. Regulatory changes that created a new long residency category of customers made earlier in 2016 have resulted in an increase in numbers of customers being referred for checks with the Home Office. This has led to an increase in processing times for such checks. Extra resource has now been provided to increase the volume completed by 25% per day.</p><p> </p><p>It is the responsibility of individual students to provide the necessary evidence in support of their application. My officials are working with the Home Office to explore what additional support or alternative solutions can be provided to increase the speed of immigration status checks.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Student Loans Company (SLC) administers student loans for each of the UK Government administrations. Statistics covering loans administered through the English loan system are published annually by the SLC in the Statistical First Release (SFR) ‘Student Loans in England’, available at:</p><p><a href="http://www.slc.co.uk/official-statistics/full-catalogue-of-official-statistics/student-loans-debt-and-repayment.aspx" target="_blank">http://www.slc.co.uk/official-statistics/full-catalogue-of-official-statistics/student-loans-debt-and-repayment.aspx</a></p><p>Latest information on the number of students who were estimated to meet the eligibility criteria for full-time English Tuition Fee Loans and who received such a loan from the SLC in the academic year 2013/14 is available in Table 4B(ii) of the SFR. The figures show that, in 2013/14, an estimated 10 per cent of students at public providers of higher education who met the eligibility criteria for English Tuition Fee Loans did not take up such a loan to fund their studies.</p><p>Statistics on loan take-up in the academic year 2014/15 will be published by the SLC on 30 November 2016.</p>

answer text <p>The Government’s policy is that maintenance support is provided to cover a range of student expenditure, and is only a contribution to students’ costs. Maintenance support is linked to parental income, to ensure that students from lower income backgrounds receive the highest rates of loan, and for new students beginning study this academic year, maintenance support has increased by up to 10.3% on the previous year.</p><p> </p><p>In addition to their maintenance support, students may be eligible for financial assistance from their university. In 2016/17, £745 million is expected to be spent by universities on measures to support the access and success of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, including through bursaries and fee waivers. Such assistance is over and above the other sources of income students may have such as their families or from paid work.</p> more like this

This estimate was derived from information on those people who had non-asylum discretionary leave to remain and had applied for student support. However, we do not have information on the length of time these individuals have been in the UK or their age.
