answer text <p>The Government offers two separate Research and Development (R&amp;D) tax reliefs, the Research and Development Expenditure Credit (RDEC) and an additional Corporation Tax deduction for Small and Medium-sized enterprises. Both are available to loss-makers as well as profit-makers.</p><p>The estimated total number of R&amp;D tax credit claims for the year ending March 2020 was 85,900, with total support claimed £7.4 billion. This corresponds to £47.5 billion of R&amp;D expenditure.</p><p>The Government is currently undertaking a review of the reliefs. The objectives of the review are to ensure the UK remains a competitive location for cutting edge research, that the reliefs continue to be fit for purpose, and that taxpayer money is effectively targeted.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Government is providing the fastest ever sustained uplift in R&amp;D funding, reaching £20 billion per annum by the end of the SR period – £5 billion more than 2021/22. We remain committed to the target of UK economy-wide R&amp;D investment reaching 2.4% of GDP by 2027.</p><p> </p><p>As the custodian of the R&amp;D system, BEIS received its largest ever R&amp;D budget at SR21 with £39.8bn over the SR period. We have now set out how funding will be allocated across our partner organisations over the next three years. answer text <p>We recognise the important role that the private non-profit sector, such as charities, play in both funding and performing R&amp;D. In 2019, the private non-profit sector funded £1,766 million worth of R&amp;D and performed £843 million of R&amp;D. The Greater South East contributes the highest share of private non-profit expenditure on R&amp;D, with 84% of total expenditure in 2019 vs 16% for outside of the region.</p><p> </p><p>The Levelling Up White Paper shows that we are committed to increasing total investment in R&amp;D across the whole of the UK, of which private non-profit R&amp;D is an important element.</p> more like this
