answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 31/01/2024 answer text <p>We publish the number of assaults against prison staff, broken down by prison, as part of our Safety in Custody statistics, in Table 8e of the summary tables, available at the following link:</p><p><a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/safety-in-custody-quarterly-update-to-september-2023" target="_blank">Safety in custody: quarterly update to September 2023 - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).</a></p><p>Figures up until September 2023 have been published at the above link, however figures for the whole of 2023 are not due for publication until April 2024 and cannot be released at this time.</p><p>We are committed to making prisons a safe place to work and providing prison officers with the right support, training and tools to empower them to do their jobs.</p><p>To protect staff and prisoners in very serious assaults, we are continuing to roll out PAVA – a synthetic pepper spray – for use by prison officers in the adult male estate. Staff are able to use the PAVA spray where there is serious violence or an imminent or perceived risk of it.</p><p>We have rolled out a new Body Worn Video Camera system which has increased the overall number of cameras across public sector prisons to over 13,000. This enables every operational band 3-5 officer on shift to wear a camera. They are supported by a new Policy Framework which mandates the wearing of the cameras.</p><p>The new Body Worn Video Camera system will be fully networked and accessible via current prison IT improving access to footage and the ability to share it with other agencies, with the overall aim of increasing use and transparency. Care is taken when processing and analysing returns but the detail is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. Although shown to the last case, the figures may not be accurate to that level.</p><p>The Prisons Strategy White Paper set out how we will improve safety and security in our prisons. Please note that assaults committed during education activities are a total of the assaults that, when reported, had their location flagged as &quot;Education&quot;.</p><p>Despite the progress made, the level of violence in prisons remains too high. We are continuing work to address this by giving all staff the tools and training to help them reduce violence.</p><p>Violence in prison is a crime. Any prisoner who commits an act of violence can expect to have action taken against them.</p><p>We are spending £100 million to bolster prison security, clamping down on the weapons, drugs and mobile phones that fuel violence and crime behind bars. This included a 5% decrease in assaults on staff and a 7% reduction in serious assault from the previous 12 months. Assaults have now fallen for the last three published quarters.</p><p>Despite the progress made, the level of violence in prisons remains too high and we continue to work hard to address this. We are giving staff the tools and training to help them reduce violence including embedding the Challenge, Support and Intervention Plan to support those at risk of violence, the roll-out of PAVA incapacitant spray and implementing key work across the prison estate. We are rolling out our key worker model to provide individual support to each prisoner from a dedicated officer. We have equipped officers with body-worn cameras and are rolling out PAVA incapacitant spray to help prevent serious harm to staff and prisoners when dealing with violent incidents. As part of our £2.75 billion plan to transform the prison estate, we are investing £100 million to bolster security and tackle the supply of illicit items which drive prison violence.</p><p> </p><p>Up to £2.5 billion will be spent on creating 10,000 additional modern prison places to crack down on crime. Modern prisons provide better opportunities to reform criminals and cut the £18 billion cost of reoffending to society each year. We have recruited over 4,700 more prison officers since October 2016 and we now have the greatest number in post since early 2012. The Challenge, Support and Intervention Plan case management process for prisoners at risk of violence has been mandated for all prisons to help staff to manage violent prisoners and those identified as posing a raised risk of being violent.</p><p> </p><p>We have announced an extra £100 million for security, on top of £70 million we were already spending to make prisons safer, more secure and decent. This is part of the Government’s new £2.75bn investment to modernise and maintain our prisons, create 10,000 additional places, and step up security to stop the flow of drugs and mobile phones. We are equipping officers with PAVA incapacitant spray and body-worn cameras to help prevent serious harm to staff and prisoners when dealing with violent incidents. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 29/10/2019 answer text <p>Detailed information on the proportion of assaults on prison staff since 2010 is held on court record but to be able to identify these cases we would have to access individual court records which would be of disproportionate cost.</p><p>We take violence against our staff very seriously. We have invested in 5,600 Body Worn Video Cameras (BWVC) across the prison estate which has been rolled out alongside training in staff interaction with prisoners, to support better relationships. We have also begun implementation for a national rollout of PAVA, a synthetic pepper spray, which will provide prison officers with additional safety equipment to reduce the risk of serious injury.</p><p> </p><p>Staff will be able to use the PAVA spray where there is serious violence or an imminent or perceived risk of it and there is an immediate necessity to create a safe and protective environment. Only prisons who have rolled out the key worker scheme – which is vital in building relationships between offenders and staff – will receive PAVA.</p><p> </p><p>Alongside the rollout of PAVA will be the introduction of a new Personal Safety package; (S.P.E.A.R.). This is to ensure that PAVA is introduced as part of a wider package of skills for staff to resolve and deescalate incidents. The training is based on using the body’s natural flinch reaction when faced with danger and focuses on pre-contact cues to give staff greater awareness of their surroundings.
