<p>The Secretary of State for Education has had many representations on the question
of same sex marriage and relationships, but none relate to the teaching of British
values because that is a different matter. All schools have an important part to play
in preparing their pupils for life in modern Britain by promoting the fundamental
British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and, mutual respect
and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. In addition, all schools
are already required to abide by the Equality Act 2010 and promote principles which
encourage respect for other people, with particular regard to protected characteristics.
It is right to respect other people, even if you do not agree with their way of life.
This is a fundamental part of preparation for life in modern Britain, and a principle
with which all schools should agree.</p><p> </p>
