answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 05/06/2019 answer text <p>The UK recognises the United Nations Relief and Works Agency's (UNRWA) unique mandate from the UN General Assembly, to protect and provide essential services to Palestinian refugees across the Middle East. The UK continues to adhere to UNRWA's definition of a Palestinian refugee: those whose 'normal place of residence was Palestine during the period 1 June 1946 to 15 May 1948 and who lost both home and means of livelihood as a result of the 1948 conflict'. We are clear that the status of Palestinian refugees must be agreed as part of wider peace negotiations. Meanwhile, the UK remains firmly committed to supporting the UNRWA across the Middle East. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 22/05/2018 answer text <p>We are not aware of an increase in the number of internally displaced persons within Gaza, or an increase in the number of refugees in the region, as a result of the recent violence on the Israel-Gaza border. However, more than 22,500 people remain displaced in Gaza since the 2014 conflict.</p><p> </p><p>The UK is a long term supporter of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) which supports Palestinian refugees across the region, including those displaced in Gaza, through the provision of: basic education to around 500,000 children; health services for around 3 million Palestinian refugees; social assistance for approximately 280,000 of the poorest Palestinian refugees; and a source of income for almost 30,000 refugees working for UNRWA. question text	To ask Her Majesty's Government, following the statement by UNRWA on 26 April, what action they will take to protect and provide for Palestinian refugees in the Palestine refugee camp of Yarmouk in Damascus and surrounding areas.

Humanitarian access remains restricted due to ongoing military activity and the presence of Daesh. The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), supported by DFID, has had no direct access to the camp since April 2015.</p><p> </p><p>We continue to call on all parties to protect civilians, and to allow humanitarian agencies unfettered access to provide aid to those most in need, including at the UN Security Council and the International Syria Support Group.
