answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 22/04/2024 answer text <p>The Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning (OPRED) undertook a screening assessment under the Offshore Petroleum Activities (Conservation of Habitats) Regulations 2001. This assessment included consultation with appropriate nature conservation bodies, including Joint Nature Conservation Committee. OPRED also undertook a Marine Conservation Zone / Marine Protected Area assessment in accordance with the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009.</p><p> </p><p>OPRED’s assessments concluded that award of the first 27 licences would not result in adverse impacts on the relevant protected areas. The SoS received advice from OPRED on the outcome of these assessments throughout the 33<sup>rd</sup> Round process. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 12/03/2024 answer text <p>We have established a comprehensive network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) covering 40% of English waters and last year introduced a new statutory MPA target. All MPAs are protected through the planning and licensing process. We are also working with regulators to introduce any necessary additional management measures. 60% of the 181 English MPAs are already protected from damaging fishing activity through byelaws, including the new byelaw announced in February to ban bottom trawling in a further 13 MPAs. Our scientific advisors (Natural England and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee) are developing an MPA monitoring strategy to assess progress towards meeting the statutory MPA target, including whether the necessary management measures are in place. The MMO is analysing the responses received to this latest call for evidence before deciding what byelaws might need to be consulted on. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 22/11/2023 answer text <p>The UK was pleased to be among the first signatories to the Biodiversity beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement when it opened for signature at the UN on 20 September 2023 and the Agreement was laid before Parliament for scrutiny on 16 October 2023. Work is in hand on the legislation and other measures needed to translate the provisions of the Agreement into UK law before we can ratify the Agreement. The UK will continue to be proactive in preparing for implementation and entry into force and will work with international partners and stakeholders to identify potential areas for High Seas Marine Protected Areas. This answer refers to the approach in England.</p><p> </p><p>The Government already has a comprehensive marine planning system. The aim is to manage competing demands in English seas in a balanced and integrated way, including management of Marine Protected Area (MPA).</p><p> </p><p>We have also established a cross-government Marine Spatial Prioritisation (MSPri) programme in England to respond to the growing spatial challenges in our seas, including supporting the protection and recovery of the marine environment.
