answer text
The Government is aware of Amnesty International’s report and condemns all forms of sexual violence. However the Government does not consider that a policy of increasing the number of refugees resettled from the affected region is the most effective way to address the suffering of those displaced.

We believe we can make a greater impact and help more people through the provision of substantial humanitarian aid in the region and by working with the Iraqi government and international partners to find a solution to the conflict. The UK has committed £39.5 million to meet humanitarian needs in Iraq, including shelter, water, sanitation and medical care. Our aid is reaching displaced people across Iraq, including in the Kurdish region, where many Yazidis have fled to. We are also working with the Iraqi government and the international community to tackle the threat posed by ISIL and promote an inclusive, sovereign and democratic Iraq which will protect all Iraqi citizens.

The UK is ready to assist those from Iraq and other war-torn areas of the Middle East who come here in search of protection from violent persecution. We do so without discrimination, in accordance with the Refugee Convention and the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Government believes that this approach is the best way to help Iraqi nationals who have left their countries, and we therefore have no current plans to implement or extend resettlement schemes.

answer text I welcome the military operations conducted by Iraqi forces in northern Iraq, to remove Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) from the area of Mount Sinjar. Reports suggest that early in these operations Kurdish Peshmerga, supported by Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition airstrikes, were able quickly to remove ISIL from villages and towns north of Mount Sinjar. The situation remains fluid as fighting continues but on 6 January Iraqi forces were reported to have retaken much of Sinjar city. more like this

answer text We are aware of the request made by the Government of Iraq during its statement to the First Committee of the UN General Assembly in October for Member States and relevant international organisations to conduct research into the impact of exposure to depleted uranium (DU) ammunition on human health and the environment and possible methods of treatment. We are conscious that some nations, international organisations and individuals are concerned that there may be a link between the use of DU ammunition and certain medical conditions. This is an issue taken very seriously by the Government. Scientific literature, including that of the Royal Society, the European Commission, the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Health Organisation, contains a substantial number of reports which indicate that DU has not been shown to have, and indeed is very unlikely to have, any significant impact on the health of the local population or on the veterans of conflicts in which these munitions are used.

answer text
We are aware of reports of the use of industrial chemicals as weapons by ISIL in Iraq, and encourage the Government of Iraq to bring to the attention of the OPCW any such incidents. We welcome its report to the OPCW Executive Council in October regarding the use of chlorine by terrorist groups.

We are also aware that the Al Muthanna military site is now in the control of ISIL. We continue to monitor the situation. However, we do not believe that the site contains chemical weapons-related materials of military value. Bunkers at the Al Muthanna site did contain hazardous chemical weapons-related materials used in Iraq’s Chemical Weapons programme. The materials were made safe by the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) between 1992-1994.

While the Government of Iraq has kept the international community informed of incidents, and has reiterated its commitment to all international treaties and conventions aimed at preventing the use or spread of chemical weapons, it has made no requests for assistance to the international community.

We condemn unreservedly all and any use of chemical weapons by anyone. Use is a breach of international norms. Any party using any toxic chemical in this way should be brought to justice.
