industry and groups supporting bereaved people about Social Fund Funeral Expenses Payments and in particular the maximum amount of £700 available for other costs. We have made clear that we will ensure that Funeral Expenses Payments continue to meet the necessary costs of a cremation or burial for eligible claimants. Average payments have increased year-on-year to meet these necessary costs. We have had to make difficult choices about welfare spending and it has not been possible to increase the £700 maximum for other costs. However, we have made interest-free Social Fund Budgeting Loans available for funeral costs in addition to Funeral Expenses Payments.</ins></p><p><ins class="ministerial"> </ins></p><p><ins class="ministerial">We have also been carrying out reforms to the Funeral Expenses Payments Regulations which are coming into force in April 2018. The reforms focused primarily on clarifying a number of issues around eligibility and to simplify the process for claiming a Funeral Expenses Payment. answer text <p>The Social Fund Funeral Expenses Payments scheme comprises of two elements. The first element covers the ‘necessary’ costs of arranging a funeral, which include costs of a burial or cremation including the purchase of a grave. It also meets the cost of any medical references or the removal of active implanted medical devices for cremations, reasonable costs if a body has to be moved for more than fifty miles and travel costs for the applicant to arrange and attend the funeral. These costs are paid in full and there is no maximum contribution.</p><p> </p><p>The second element covers all other costs, which are subject to a maximum of £700. We have no plans at this time to review this component of the scheme.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Department has no plans to change its clearance standard of 15 working days for Funeral Expenses Payments. The Department provides Funeral Expenses Payments to people who are arranging a funeral and who are in receipt of a qualifying income-related benefit. They make a significant contribution towards the cost of arranging a funeral, and are paid as swiftly as possible when all the necessary evidence has been provided. In most cases, payments are made directly to the funeral director who arranged the funeral.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Social Fund Funeral Expenses Payments provide help towards the cost of arranging a funeral, including the funeral of a child, for people claiming eligible benefits. They make a significant contribution to the costs of a simple funeral. The amount that an applicant will receive will vary depending on the type of funeral chosen.</p><p> </p><p>Funeral Expenses Payments cover reasonable costs for the following:</p><ul><li>burial fees and exclusive rights to burial in a particular plot,</li><li>cremation fees, including the cost of the doctor’s certificate,</li><li>one return journey to arrange or attend the funeral,</li><li>the costs of moving the body within the UK for any part of the journey that is over 50 miles.</li></ul><p>In addition, Funeral Expenses Payments can provide up to £700 as a contribution to other funeral expenses.</p><p>Details of specific payments and conditions of entitlement can be found in Chapter 39 of the Decision Makers Guide: Social Fund Payments at <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/572416/dmgch39.pdf" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/572416/dmgch39.pdf</a>.</p>
