However, the UK Government recognises that much more needs to be done to ensure that the spread of Ebola in West Africa is contained. That is why my Rt Hon Friend, the Member for Witney (David Cameron), Prime Minister has pushed for an urgent and ambitious scale-up in EU and Member States resources to fight Ebola at October’s European Council. The Prime Minster will make a statement about this on Monday 27 October. Since the report was published in August exit screening in the three most affected countries is now in place.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Screening is now in operation in Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester airports and at St Pancras (Eurostar). The purpose of screening is to identify, and give advice to, passengers coming from high risk areas who will be spending time in the United Kingdom. The outbreak was declared an international public health emergency by the United Nations in August. The advice from PHE has been extensive, covering issues such as guidance on the management of patients and infection control and prevention for staff.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The Chief Medical Officer has issued three Central Alerting System alerts on the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, on 2 July, 1 August and 7 October. The alert reminded healthcare providers to remain vigilant for cases imported to the United Kingdom, emphasising the importance of taking a full travel history when assessing relevant patients and information on identifying and managing possible cases of Ebola virus disease and actions for all clinicians to ensure preparedness for the possibility of an imported case in the UK.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>These alerts were cascaded to the entire NHS in England, as well as PHE, PHE Consultants in Communicable Disease Control, PHE Consultants in Health Protection,</p><p> </p><p>Trust Microbiologists, Virologists and Infectious Disease Clinicians, private hospitals across England and Clinical Commissioning Group Leads. UK support will include the construction of six Ebola treatment centres across the country, providing 700 beds to treat 8,800 patients over the next six months.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>In support of this effort, the UK has deployed 750 military personnel to Sierra Leone. This will support the deployment of RFA Argus and three Merlin helicopters which will provide crucial transport support to medical teams and aid experts. This screening will be for passengers that Border Force officers identify as having travelled from Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia or for those passengers who identify themselves to staff.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Screening is being implemented by PHE staff, who follow official protocols. PHE has issued guidance to its staff and for professionals across other sectors, about how to deal with a suspected case of Ebola. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/10/2014 answer text <p>The Secretary of State laid out what hospital facilities were available for the treatment of Ebola patients during his statement to the House on 13 October 2014, Official Report, columns 28 to 46.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The National Health Service has a network of clinicians and infectious diseases units that work in a collaborative manner to manage patients with infectious diseases. In rare and complex infections, treatment is likely to include the use of isolation facilities with appropriate air handling and air filtration systems (for the protection of staff and public as per the Health and Safety Executive Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens guidelines). The use of beds is managed through the network and escalated as necessary based on the needs of the presenting patient. This has now been implemented in Heathrow airport and will be expanded to Gatwick and Eurostar terminals this week and Manchester and Birmingham airport thereafter.</p><p> </p><p><strong> </strong></p><p> </p><p>On 15 October 2014, there was a Four Nations Health Ministers meeting, with the devolved administrations, to discuss the United Kingdom response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, which included discussion on issues such as entry screening for Ebola. Additionally, officials from the Department of Health have been in regular contact with their counterparts from the devolved administrations via weekly telecommunications, in which Ebola screening at airports has been discussed. According to the latest WHO data, there have been 4493 deaths from the Ebola outbreak in West Africa as of 12 October. The US Centre for Disease Control estimates that the number of cases in West Africa could reach 1.4 million by January 2015. Friend the Secretary of State and his ministerial colleagues are involved in ongoing engagement with their European counterparts.
