answer text
The UK is a global leader in tackling HIV and we are proud to be the second largest international investor in the response. The UK’s recent £1.1billion investment to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria makes us the second largest donor during the fifth replenishment period. This support will help provide enough lifesaving anti-retroviral therapy for 1.3million people living with HIV.

DFID tracks our spending on HIV/AIDS using sector codes recommended by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) Development Assistance Committee (DAC) reporting system. This information is published on the Development Tracker website and in Statistics for International Development.

more like this

answer text
Our HIV and AIDS work has focused on multilateral instruments (Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, UNITAID and UNAIDS), given their greater reach and scale. The Global Fund helps countries avoid stock outs of drugs and supports patients to sustain treatment, which are two key factors in preventing drug resistance.

UNITAID has also played a key role in tackling HIV drug resistance by building the market for second-line antiretroviral treatment. Over 100,000 patients a year now have access to UNITAID-supported second-line HIV medicines.

We and our partners make use of reports such as the Global Report on Early Warning Indicators of HIV Drug Resistance published by WHO earlier this year.
more like this

answer text
The UK, as a member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Development Assistance Committee (DAC), is committed to transparent reporting of development assistance. Details of DFID expenditure can be found in Statistics on International Development GPEX tables, available on our website at: www.gov.uk/government/statistics?departments%5B%5D=department-for-international-development.

DFID is in the process of developing our plans to 2020, so future spending has not yet been determined. The UK has made a £1.1 billion pledge to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria for the 5th replenishment 2017-2019 which will support the firm commitment to end the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030.

more like this

answer text
The UK stands as one of the world’s largest funders of essential health commodities for developing countries, largely due to our investment in multilateral organisations such as the Global Fund and Gavi, the Vaccines Alliance.

We work hard to ensure that our bilateral and multilateral partners secure maximum value for money in their purchasing of health commodities through best commercial practice, including international competitive tendering, and partnerships with the private sector. DFID’s work in this area has unlocked huge value gains across a number of key health commodity markets. For example, the cost of a year’s supply of antiretrovirals for HIV/AIDS has fallen by 50% since 2010. By the end of 2015, 17 million patients across the globe were on antiretroviral treatment, compared with 0.7 million in 2000.
more like this
